Writer’s Block is another name for laziness.
Writer’s Block is another name for laziness.
Presently I have an idea for a story. For the hours during the past two days when I could have been writing, I’ve sat and stared at the monitor and said to myself “The words won’t come,” and so I deduced I must have the famous Writer’s Block.
I could do one of two things:
I could create a new thread here, asking what I do to overcome it, and no doubt receive suggestions like “Go dig in the garden” or “Go for a walk” or “Read a book” or “Listen to some music”, or etc. You know all the fatuous remarks people come out with whenever this question’s asked.
Or I could just start writing anyway.
I’ve come to the conclusion that anyone saying “The words won’t come” is procrastinating. Writing is hard work and most people don’t like hard work. In my case, it was far easier for me to have a wander around this site until my writing time was used up again.
So in future, whenever I want to write, I will overcome the “not writing” by writing.
If I don’t do that, clearly I don’t want to write and I’m only bullshitting myself if I say I do.

You know, in all the time I've posted and lurked here, I think I've seen maybe one example of your writing. You've got tons of good questions regarding writing, but it seems like you're always on here. Do you even write?
In all seriousness though...I know exactly what you mean. Instead of writing, I'm here and talking to my girlfriend. And I've been doing that for the past three days. Shame.
I need to kick my ass into gear, I'm too lazy. I'll do that later though.

It's true, Ox, that writing my way through is best cure I've found for writer's block. Sometimes you just have to force yourself to fill up some space on the page, whether the mood is in you or not. It part of developing a writer's discipline.

Writer's Block = pure, utter cack.
I don't care what anyone says. All you writers on this forum can come and blast me at will if you want, but it won't change the fact that Writer's Block is a figment of the imagination.
Did you ever notice how people with this magical condition never seem to have a problem writing, usually in detail, all about their supposed block?

Although there's no question that every writer knows times when the creative juices flow more easily than others, I don't believe there is any dry spell that can't be gotten through if the writer is willing to just get up and do the work and never mind whether they feel like it or not. That being said,we've all had days or weeks when writing is more of effort than usual.

I agree with everything you've said, Ox. I can't even count how many posts I've stumbled about here asking for cures for writer's block.
I have one: Get off Writingforums.com and get on your word processor.

some days the last thing I want to do is write. If there's not too many of them in a row I enjoy them. I eat chocolate and go walking. I sometimes find a nice place to read and fall asleep. Those days are for recharging batteries. If I get a whole bunch of them I just make myself work through the idleness. Slow progress though.

Good suggestions, Bourbon. Sometimes your brain just gets fried after a lot of hours at the computer.

Amen OW.
I work 8 hours a day in front of a computer; the last thing I want to do when I go home is spend more time in front of one. At least not for something resembling work.

I guess I'm old-fashioned. I still write everything in longhand first. Then when I type it into the computer, I do a lot of rewriting & editing. I seem to think better with pen in hand than I do with keyboard under hand.
