The Ol' Traditional Publishers

So now I've finished my book a few months ago and I have been searching and searching for agents, editors, and publishers. Concerning the publisher part, I would like to ask if someone could provide me with some names of some traditional publishers? I've been looking around the net lately and mostly been finding self-publishers, and vanity publishers. I even accidentally submitted my manuscript to Tate which I heard is a sneaky vanity publisher. I know there's Tom Doherty, but could anyone give me some other names of traditional publishers?

Taxiday is an unknown quantity at this point
There's a website for Writer's Digest that lists publishers and I think the 2008 version is available in every bookstore in the world.
Or, do a Google search for "Publishers"

S-wo,
Now that you've finished your book, visit your local bookstore and make a list of the authors and their publishers that write in your genre. You can also visit websites like Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers. They all list recognized and approved publishers required for membership. Good luck.

Such questions are work best when you say what kind of book it is.

There are LOT'S of databases on the internet and your library will certainly have the Writer's Digest books and various compendia of publishing.

Search agents first. Unless you KNOW for sure a pubco reads slush.
Search the email-acceptors first. It's free.

Lin's right. What kind of publishers you want to look at really depends on the genre you're writing. I'll second the suggestion to take a look around the Predators & Editors website. They have great publisher and agency listings. I'd also recommend buying a copy of Writers Market. It'll cost you a little bit, but it's worth its weight (and as a pretty hefty book it weighs quite a bit). Any bookstore or library that has a section devoted to writing will have copies available. Just make sure the one you're getting is current with updated information.

Have a look at this page. We've tried to screen out all dodgy stuff and list only the good ol' traditional publishers and agents who should never ask you to pay anything - at all!

How to find a Publisher or Literary Agent?
