OX, Godetc. is not answering me; I'm invisible - I don't mind it's not my thread.
l can wait until Sam's problem is sorted - but I would still like to know, (nudge).

Why didn’t you post this a week earlier when I had some expert advice at my fingertips? Now I have to wade through some archives to find it.
Fuck it, I’ll wing it. That’s what everyone else does.
“I’ve heard from a reliable source that XP may be being phased out.”
Silly OX. That wasn’t hard to say when I say it quickly. On the other hand I also heard from a different source that Service Pack 3 is in the pipeline, which seems to contradict my first remark.
Whatever, I have to say my experience with Vista was not encouraging. And that was Vista Ultimate, the flagship of the fleet, the Bismarck of Microsoft’s little navy. Andrea Doria, more like. I tried it for a week or two then frisbeed it.
Dunno about Word 07, but have heard other rumbles like Sam’s. And as Harry said, there’s always OpenOffice. Imho, Word ’03 should be good enough for we amachers.
My pc went pear-shaped - that is, the hard drive started making noises - and I had a local feller build me a new one. Could of done it myself if I could of followed all the pretty little coloured cables. Under half the price of a pc in a box from Acme ‘Puters.
But it depends what you mean by burping and farting. It could be that all that’s needed is some housekeeping. Do you have a regular clean out? Do you eat your All Bran every morning? You may need to do a registry clean, and a ScanDisc and Clean Disc, and a defrag, and a spyware check, and all the rest of that shit, and she could be as good as new.
I have heard too that free email programs like Hotmail, Incredimail, etc, come with their own built-in gremlins that may foul the nest. Anyone using Word 03, it was probably part of Office 03 and Office 03 also has Outlook, as good an email program as one could want. Even Outlook Express is good.
If your really insistent that things are bad how about a Mac? Again I know nothing about them, but I hear good reports.

I'm happy with Word 03 - still don't use all the bells and whistles -why should I want - hooters and sirens?
My pc went pear-shaped - that is, the hard drive started making noises - Me too, like a - kookaburra in a tumble drier - and I had a local feller build me a new one. Could of done it myself .... Liar.

Look, I just poke at the keys here. I don't rebebmer all this technostuff. I seem to recall it was visually unstable - like a dance of the seven veils type of thing. I just didn't like it.
My Q, is really about Vista. Mac is not an option due to the PC programmes I already have. Ok. But I believe Macs are now compatible with pc programs.
btw programmes are what you see on the Beeb. We here have programs.
Thanks OX.

OpenOffice is just as good as Word, why don't you try it, it's free, doesn't need many resources, and is fully compatible with Office 2007.
|
True. But it loads slow. I use it for a lot of things, especially pdf documents.
XP is, of course, being phased out by MS. It's what they do. And they force makers of printers and such to obsoletize their own systems so you have to upgrade to be able to buy a printer that works with your setup.
But XP is unique because the MASSIVE public resistance to Vista is caused the phase-out to be delayed and "flexible".
Office 2007 is a piece of shit across the board, I'd say

Don't get Vista. Christ, it's on my (brand flipping new) work computer, and I'm about ready to burn the thing down; it's lost me days of work multiple times. Freezes this, freezes that, incompatiable with everything else.
I used Word 2007, and as far as I can tell, it's ok once you get used to it. Of course, it can glitch up, but all things can. Just remember to format it differently if you want to open those documents on any older versions of Word.

I was also going to suggest OpenOffice if you can't figure out your problem, Sam. It is slower, and you'll need to get used to a slightly different looking document, but it works. I finally gave up and installed it on my work computer, and it's working a lot better; you'll lose some time to get it up, but that's about it.

I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling, if that doesn't work maybe load an older copy of Word and perhaps that will work.
Either that or Microsoft Word 2007 is not compatiable with your computer for whatever reason.

No one in their right mind pays for ANYTHING to do with computers. At little research, and you'll find that anything you need, you can download for free.

I sent the guy the email, OX. It'll be a while I think. For now I'm content to wait and suffer through it.
Thanks for all the advice, everyone.

OX, your guy came through at last. Thanks.
For anyone who has ever had this problem, or is still having this problem, here is the solution I was given:
Word is analysing your document because there is an add-in installed on Microsoft Word 2007 called PDF.Maker. This is a program for making PDF files. The program needs to analyse every new Word document which is opened up to check for compatibility issues and other problems. If you remove the addin (for Word 2007, click on the Office Button on the very top left-hand side of Word, go down to "Word Options" and you'll find add-ins in there. Click "manage add-ins" and remove the file called PDF.Maker. If this doesn't work, it should give you an error message saying that it cannot remove the file. At the bottom of that error message, it will give the exact location of the file - something like C: Program Files, Adobe, etc... - go into it and delete the PDF.Maker file manually) everything should now work perfectly for you.
And it did. So thanks for the recommendation, OX.

My pleasure, Sam.
I'm sticking with '03. But I'll file Ray's reply in case I ever get itchy feet.

Glad you were able to find a solution to your problem.
As a longtime Word user (we're talking Word 5.1/6.0, early 90s) I've long said that they should have stopped with Word 98. As far as I was concerned (technical writer/editor) that was the first version they got right. Of course subsequent versions had improvements (esp. the inclusion of VBA) but from a user perspective 98 was pretty straightforward.
Having said that, you never could have told me that I'd be (more or less) happily using Word 2007 right now. Part of me still finds the interface annoying but underneath the cutesy tabs are the same dialogs that existed in previous versions.
Ultimately, though, as a fiction writer, I could have stuck with Word 6.0.

If you have enough RAM and are capable of keeping your files organized, Vista isn't that bad.
Google Docs is the way of the future. Internet apps, I mean.
