Nacreous, I just sent you a PM. Let's work this out there. The links you're using here will not work.

Here's the easiest way I know.

First, do you have a picture hosting site? If not, I use photobucket. (Register for free at Photobucket.com)

Right. So register, upload your photos right from your computer, and from there it's so easy it's sad, really.

1) Copy your image's IMG Code (found below your picture in photobucket)

2) Come back here and paste it right in the Quick Reply box. (Do not mess with it or anything else. Just paste.)

3) See the bottom of this Quick Reply box? There's a button that says "Go Advanced." Hit that. Then marvel at your picture. (From there you'll have to hit "Submit Reply" to post it.)

Edit: Oops. Sorry, Foxee. I didn't see your post until now.

well ... you've got the right code - but you're asking our computers to look for a file which doesn't exist in our computers ... only in yours ...

try this:

Open the reply box ... scroll down until you see:

Attach Files - click on [Manage Attachments]

this will show you that various formats are supported and can be loaded directly from your computer - but they must be small files (eg <20kb for a jpg) ...

this is why I suggested earlier that you open a free online image host account - this gives you an online gallery to upload your images directly from your computer (it offers a browser to help you find the right files) ...

it also gives you the entire code, so you don't have to worry about "insert image" boxes or square brackets and IMG coding yourself -

you simply highlight the right code (the one which starts with IMG - or img - in square brackets - at Imageshack it's called "the code for forums"; I can't remember what it's called at Photobucket) -

and paste the code directly into the textbox of your reply ...

then - Preview Post ... make sure the image is there before submitting your reply ...

that saves everyone from staring at:
IMG]http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/1075/cran5nl5.jpg[/IMG]

instead of:

Folks, I know you're trying to be helpful and you are...however, Nacreous's problem begins with the fact that he's on a Mac and trying to get this photo from a NASA website. The link location of the pic - not the page - needs to be copied.

What would really help would be if there is a friendly MAC user who knows how to do this. All the talk of hosting sites is really not helpful for this particular problem.

Is the picture in the public domain? If so, it's easy enough to save a copy to your computer and then upload it to a picture hosting site like photobucket, and then use the IMG code. (I would assume that it doesn't make a difference when using a Mac, but I've never used one).

ahh ... well then, all one needs do is copy the url of the page*,

*Best if he can "view image" of the actual image he wants -
on a pc, this is done by right-clicking on the image,
and then selecting "view image" - this will bring up a page that only has that image on it ...

and use the insert link (Earth and chain) icon above the textbox ...

or, as that will only provide a hotlink to the image ... thus:

http://www.writingforums.com/avatars/foxee.gif?dateline=1209838777

copy the url of the "viewed" image (page with only the desired image on it)
and paste that into the textbox between

IMG]copied url here[/IMG] ...
and put a starting square bracket at the beginning ...
the IMG coding tells the forum host computer to read the contained code for an image, rather than creating a hotlink ...

easier still, paste the copied url into the insert image (mountain and moon) box

which does exactly the same thing as typing square brackets and IMGs ...

yes - NASA policy is that their images are freely available for use,
but do not alter/crop the image (which includes title and source material) ...
or if you must (for some purposes), then include the title and source elsewhere on the document/site ...

but Foxee's eyes are nicer to look at ...

Wow. This is the cutest thread I've ever seen! *cuddles nacreous* Don't be sad.

But at the same time, that's what you get for having a mac...

that's OK ... last time I used a Mac was in university (many moons ago) ...

so, what options do you get when you click and/or right-click on the (online) image you want?

and, what options do you get from your drop-down menus at the top of your web browser (try whatever passes for "view", "file" or "tools" first ...)?

edit: reason for asking - options can vary not only between Macs and Windows, but also between web browsers (IE, Netscape, Firefox, etc) ...

look, I cant handle this stuff anymore. I cant do this, and I dont care anymore.
to make matters worse, I am now in possession of a personal e-mail from foxee which literally mocks and condemns me for giving up.
Is that what moderators do around here?
I think I'd be better off without them.

I don’t know anything about the technical aspects here but I believe you’re talking through your arse about a moderator mocking and condemning you. I think you have your wires seriously crossed. Are you sure you haven’t been sniffing the locoweed?
