Depends on the forum.

I posted a question about googleability (a site was showing no 1 on google in some states, not showing at all in others) on a web design forum with a link to the site involved. 2 hours later (I kid you not) that link had replaced the original site at no 1.

Google has lowered the relevance of links on forums, though - it used to be that all links counted, so links in your sig and lots of posts = good seo. Now, not.

In bound links are what counts. Forums are indexed, that's all I know. For example, if I have a technical question I'll often Google it, the answer will show up from within a forum.

Google indexes dynamic content, -- content stored in database -- like this site. I don't fully understand how. Even so called experts don't. And there are so many little tricks and methods, like adding keywords to alt tags, that some experts say will help, that others say will hurt you.

SEO experts basically generate content for your site with the appropriate density of keywords, then throw the dice. And they ensure that basic "rules" for SEO are followed, like including relevant keywords in a page's title tag -- the text that appears in your browser window. On this site it's "Writers Forum - WritersForums.com." That's a lousy title tag, by the way, and that's just amateur SEO stuff.

But the quality of the site and the rankings -- zilch. I know web guys in my town who are shitty designers that have number 1 rankings for search terms like "web design Atlanta." I spend no time on rankings. I let them slug it out for the crappy little projects that come to them through Google. They are welcome to them.

This might not be the most popular forum on the planet, but seriously does anyone know any other writing forums that get as many posts per day?

Maybe that will change?

People like Baron who use this site as a free advertising medium will be getting mad about now.

Erm, are we using the same google? (Granted, I do go to google.us because google.com redirects me to google.no which annoys the frick out of me.) Anyways, I just googled 'writing forums' and holy crap, we're still on top.

Not all forums are indexed. (None that are passworded)

Also, outbound links, while not as charged as backlinks, are also significant to ratings.

Come on, Ox. Get off it. Anybody can use this forum to promote whatever they point to, their own or other's people's. One good thing about this site is people don't get all hysterical about promo links and signatures. For whatever fucked-up reason they assume people will be harmed by this.

Signally out Baron comes off particularly fumble-fingered, since he does so much critiquing of other people's poems. Unlike certain bovine aussies around the bush, no?

Perhaps the new ranking has something to do with the site being down practically all the time?
I just googled "writing forums" and this is what I got:

We're still near the top, but "database error" is before us

Whoever is running the site needs to find a new host. 99.5% uptime is the lowest you should tolerate before finding someone new.

EDIT:
Yep, I'm a moron. Looks like they just found a new host about two days before I posted this

Interesting to note. If I google 'writing forum', we're no. 2. If I google 'writing forums', we're no. 1.

Oh well.

That's strange. I googled both of them and we're coming back no.1 on both.

Since the site's come back, we've only had about half a dozen new recruits. What's going on there? We used to have that many in one day.
