Comment on others' stories. They will return the favour.

Yes, they do. You should put a line in your signature--perhaps with a link to your piece--requesting a critique in return for your own.

I'll give it a try. However, I don't see how they could have missed mine since it was right next to theirs. I responded to four other stories right after having submitted mine. I have posted two stories, and a revision of one. Confuzzled is the only other person who responded to one of them. Which, by the way, I appreciated greatly.

Since I write in Swedish and most people here can't understand that I don't have any personal experience but I don't think you can't automatically expect to get response once you've commented other stories. However, if you keep responding to others and keep posting your own stuff I'm pretty sure you'll get plenty of comments. While I don't submit (or honestly even comment much) myself, most posted stories seem to get their fair share of response eventually.

It takes a bit of time to get noticed. At 21 (and 16 for you, Lora) posts you're still relative unknowns. Participation will get you noticed--a lot of it.

I'm not naive to the fact that I 'm new, and I am not even upset about the lack of attention. It just threw me a little when people were not even returning the favor. It's like being a freshman in highschool all over again.

Heh, I should have read this thread before. I have commented on a couple other short stories, but haven't gotten any comments on my short story so far. I think I'll take the advice of linking it in my signature. Oh, and might as well take this opportunity - please head on over to the Short Story Forum when you get a chance and critique my short story (in progress)! I will return the favor, if no one else will.

You can always pm people whose work you've critiqued and remind them to return the favour.

Interesting thought, but I think I'll pass. I'll stick my foot in a door, but I refuse to enter without a warrent.

Certain people have other ways of drawing friendly fire. Or, as my old granny used to say, "All publicity's good publicity".
