Hemingway is herladed because be was the harbinger of a style that has been perused and expanded upon by countless writers. In terms of actual prose, he's been outshined countless times by contemporary novelists, but because he is the man who brought it to the table, he's the one we see as the focal point. I recently bought the Barnes and Noble "Essential Writers," collection of Hemingway and adored it, so don't think I'm trying to open an attack on him. However, he is open to critique. As much as I enjoyed his stories, at times I felt like he must have been listening to a metronome while he was writing.
Anyways, I agree with Lin, but I rather be a little more blunt in stating my opinion regarding the matter: If you suck, people won't comment.
When I comment on a story, I don't do it with the intention of hoping they'll see mine and comment back--that's stupid. If I see something I like, or notice an error that I feel some inexplicable urge to want to fix, then I'll comment.
This whole "Give and Take," mindset some of you seem to have is funny. If I post something and no one comments, then it's because my writing sucked, plain and simple.
OH! And one more thing. If your story is falling low on the radar, please don't "Bump," it. Those writers piss me off more than anything.

Since when has anything posted by anybody had anything to do with the thread where it appears?

Yes, the writing might have sucked... but if no one says why, how does one improve? I agree that "bumping" is annoying, but you can't expect everyone who joins here to be perfect or even decent on the first try. That's why they come: to improve.

I agree, if you came here to write you want to have critiques and bumping the thread is okay. Well, it's okay as long as it isn't that frequent; I try to wait a couple days before I bump a thread of mine again.
EDIT: I meant bumping, as in asking questions, not just bumping looking for praise.

If you just bump, it's best to provide some more incentive for a post. Ask questions, point out edits. but "bump" is not acceptable on its own, IMO.

That made my teeth itch the first time I read it. Now it's been foisted on an unsuspecting public again. Three strikes and I shall ask a mod to trash the thread in the interests of common sanity.

Not when people like us keep bumping it, lol.
Anyway, all this for one simple question as to how to get readers? Seems a lot.
