Spoken Word
The idea of posting voice recordings of poetry is being tossed around in the poetry forum at the moment. I would like to suggest to the admin that perhaps there could be a specific section for this purpose.

A Mentor has mentioned this to the rest of the staff. We're discussing it now. Thank you for mentioning it in site announcements so everyone is aware of it and can voice their opinion on it.

Let me just say this.
If this idea ever gets off the ground, please, please, please consider employing professional voices to do your recordings. I mean, it’s bad enough having to read this shite; if additionally I am to be subjected to dialect from such places as Devon, Yorkshire, the Outer Hebrides, the East End, Alabama, New York City or anywhere in the South Island of New Zealand, I think I shall open a vein
Seriously, have any of you considered what’s involved in well-presented speech? Really thought about it? For example, how many wpm is ideal delivery? Have you matched that notion against the image conjured up (in the minds of the outside world) of some of the personality types who scribble this rubbish, and how that personality might manifest in the spoken word?
Gaaaaaah, again

wpm? We're talking about poetry not a typing contest.
OX, nobody twists your arm and makes you read or listen to anything. You do so because you choose to.

I second (third, fourth, whatever) this motion.
Poetry is meant to be heard, not just read. A spoken word section would add a whole new dimension to this site.
And that's all I've got ta say 'bout that.

Seriously, have any of you considered what’s involved in well-presented speech? According to my former voice and diction teacher, we should all sound English. Really thought about it? For example, how many wpm is ideal delivery? It varies. Up to the poet/ess. Have you matched that notion against the image conjured up (in the minds of the outside world) of some of the personality types who scribble this rubbish, and how that personality might manifest in the spoken word? I hope you are not refering to me...if you aren't, then I can't argue with you there.

Ox, sometimes I wonder if you are ALWAYS facetious, and whether or not I should take everything you say as being sarcastic (i.e. meaning the opposite of what you wrote).

If I answered that, it would take away from the atmosphere I’ve worked so hard to create

People need to realise that spoken word is NOT just a poem read aloud; it's a form of its own and has very different boundaries to the written word. If the section is simply filled with pompous twats reading their poems, it will be a fucking nightmare. However, if people learn and develop a spoken word style, there is nothing wrong with it.
What will be interesting is how many people will be able to do it. I can count on one hand the number of people in the poetry section that write aural poetry; I'm sure many will record clips that are little more than recitals, and they will have to suffer harsh criticism.
If we have a spoken word section, it has to be for aural works (very few differentiate between poetry, prose or anecdotes when it comes to spoken word, and the section should not either) and NOT just a chance for people to perform recitals of written work.

I agree a spoken word section would be pretty awesome. I've been doing slam poetry for about six months now and I would love to have a place where I can get real feedback on my poems before I bring them to the stage (okay, coffeehouse floor, but still)

The nature of poetry is traditionally that it should be spoken. This is one of the factors that defines poetry from prose.
