I think many of us would benefit from this site being down. I know I've gotten a hell of a lot of writing done within those three days.

Ox, maybe it's like when you tie your bedsheets to your truck's bumper and go cruising for hookers - the sheets flapping in the wind get rid of all kind of bedbugs and fleas.
"The powers that be" use the same strategy on this site-after three days, only the hardened remain - or the seriously desperate.

Not only was this site down, my laptop is dead (And I hadn't backed up the last week's writing) and the DVD player on this PC was out. And I've had the whole holiday season off. And I had the flu. And my wife was out of town. This was supposed to be my time to kick back, write and watch old movies. Oh, well, I'll kill 'em next year.

Towards the end of the month the site runs outta gas (as in gas money).
I assume that the current owner buys what space he can with the funds that this place generates. (20,000 members and 4000 active)
Short of having ugly banners all over the place (I think the ads here are O>K)
it's something you tend to live with here.

I hope your wrong about that Eggo 'cause it's a Hell of a way to run a railroad. I can not believe that's the reason only because, if I was the owner, I'd pass around the hat first -of course, I got no pride.
You lose a lot of customers when you close the door. I left the last forum for just that reason - the owner shut it down for five days without notice to change servers, again and again and again.
This forum has a core of bright people and I would hate to move on - at least until I'm forced out by an angry mob.
The most mystifying phenomena here is the ghost like ownership- No explanation or even a link to donations in times of need.
I believe it was just a crashed server - unless it's happened every year?

It happens every once in a while. It's probably happened six or seven times since I've been here, usually without any explaination as to what happened.
And what's even stranger is no one usually talks about it and most, like me, don't get angry about it.
It's just the way it is.
The link to donations is a little tough to find.
So don't let it get you down to much.

I knew I'd posted previously on the subject of cash contributions by members. Fifteen minutes searching found this - http://www.writingforums.com/lounge/...blem-site.html particularly your Post #7 and my Post #8 in response, which was apparently not well-received at that time by the masses. So here it is again.
And according to a post by Selorian at WritingDiscussions.com, a crash of this nature last happened here, at WF.com, as recently as July '07.

True it did happen then and a few times before that as well.
if you care to make donations to the site you can find the link under user cp.
Just go all the way down to subscriptions and you can sign up for a month or a year.
or here's the link;
http://www.writingforums.com/payments.php
Personally I'd like to see where you you could just make a donation of anything, but to be honest the site goes down at a whim without any explaination, so I'm not really all the hot to donating.

Well I paid -monthly only. When you're as old as Ox and me, you don't want to plan too far in the future.
The big advantage to paying is that you find out the owner of this site and his phone number.
Then, when the toilets overflow, you know who to call.
Thanks for the information.
