My idea was a simple request for administrators who control community-based websites like this to stop being nitwits. But through persuasion, I was hoping to pull this off. Oh, but the educated jackass inside of me sure does want to be a prick about it.
Ooh, bias! Yes, bias!
Bias is the topic of concern here.
Sure, you can be biased in your writing.
I'm not going to negatively rep you for that.
I don't actually partake of the rep system.
I've got tons of negative views about how the site is handled. I have tons of views about other web forums, too. But I think that's because I've been making websites since the mid-1990s. I've seen the evolution of these things from that perspective. And, no, I wasn't a 1980s hacker who'd go on telnet just to view discussion boards. I'm not that old, but I've seen the Internet change.
Last big comment I had was on wordreference.com, which helped them reform the big Spanish language board mess they had. It still looks messy, but at least it's slightly improved.
I've been part of a lot of web communities. And I think rep counters are best in empirical websites, websites that have some kind of science behind them.
This website has literature, language, philosophy, writing, and a lot of other linguistic things behind it. This is a forum where subjectivity takes place. Grammar and a wielding of logic help make it empirical, though.
Regardless, I was given a negative rep based on a comment of mine. I commented about a speech someone gave a while back. It was about some book with metaphysical laws, such as the law of attraction. I'm for ontology and the such, but I don't think I should be given negative reputation for my views.
To tell you the truth, I probably wouldn't care about the negative reputation if it weren't for the psychological factor of appearance. And as writers, I'm sure most of you understand the concept of appearance. You understand how displaying images through words can have a profound impact upon someone's insight and psychology. You can make a person change his or her mind. You can make a person act and react differently.
Well, basically said, negative rep makes others think that person is an axiologically "bad" person. And what a person views as bad is dependent upon him or her. Still, there is a warrant for this view of bad, because we are on a community website that consists of writers, as the website is called writingforums.com.
Now, I'm not the best writer. I'm not awesome. But I know how to somewhat proofread, check for logic, and see if a message is getting across.
So, if I have negative rep, what kind of member does that represent me as to others on the website?
Does that mean I lack writing experience?
Does it mean my novel wasn't good?
Does it mean I can only offer bad advice and should be avoided?
In this case, I was given negative points for an opinion, which is purely subjective.
It wasn't negative for something such as grammar or coherence.
I hope some of you can see a reason for taking away the reputation counter. If you want to make someone look negative, then comment about or on his or her writing. If you want to make someone look positive, then comment about or on his or her writing.
I don't feel like carrying on this post too much, so I'll just look for replies.
