I think it's a little daft to do something like this...Sometimes people can be jerks, yes, but I believe this site is a good thing on the whole. At any rate, I haven't had much contact with you lakotodan, but from what I've seen you seem perfectly reasonable. I too hope you don't quit.

Sorry, I acted out of spite there. I just can't stand internet suicide notes. It sows a seed of disharmony. If something bothers you about something, you should discuss it with an admin, or some fellow members in private rather than publicly announcing your displeasure.
If you don't like the place, fine; good luck to you and may you find happiness elsewhere. But leave it at that. (That's my 2 cents, anyway.)

Entirely right. That's what the staff are here for. If you have a problem with something, contact one of them and they can sort it out for you.

thus is born the taboo of children... mate, toughen up. this is a playground compared to the world.... if you've managed to live this long... but if someone pissed you off, don't go away. show them up. They called you stupid, or worthless, show them that you're not. And if they really insulted you, get them banned...

i'm very sorry to see you go, dan!... you were one of the few always sane and serious posters here and a welcome addition, as far as i was concerned... especially since i'm so much in the minority, being closer to your age [though well over, i'm sure!] than to the other members'...
will you at least tell me privately what you found lacking?
love and hugs, maia

Thus is born the ignorance of maturity. Courtesy and maturity is what grips the rungs of the social ladder. Culture pushes off, and money gets to the top.

...I don't know if you're saying something about youth or what, shawn. there doesn't seem to be much true culture left, though. just bitterly faded facades.

I'd have to disagree. We're kind of sheltered here in the States. If you go to other countries... say Austria, and you ask if someone was in orchestra in primary. They'll say "who wasn't?". That's not true for the US, some take orchestra, some don't. Or someone in Britain who doesn't know who Admiral Nelson is... or an Irishman who can't pinpoint where Dublin is. Both don't exist, but they exist in the US.
I was always held to strong German roots, but I took my place with the British. I'm not particularly liberal in all cases, but I know when to loosen my tie. My taste palette is quite dull and I prefer a starched collar to a loose one. I say "zed" and not "z", I have a rhotic pronunciation bias. It's these little minute qualities that make up culture. I can deal with foreigners and Americans, but I'm at home with the British.
I'm saying something about handling yourself in real life. People aren't going to stand around and let you defend yourself. Sometimes you have to bite your lip and just do something because it needs to be done. Your boss is going to control your life, I can tell you that... especially if the job market continues on as it is.

money is made of cotton and ink. its a textile stain. it may rule the tides of my life. it decides if i eat or not. but it doesn't rule my thought process. i'd rather starve than be effaced.

What I'm trying to say is that political things (rebellion and such) don't have any basis for action in personal life. We have an easy life in the States. We have the luxury of being courteous and civilized in our lives. That includes not going on rants when someone insults you. Admittedly, that is planning for the future because you never know when a little tirade is going to bite you in the arse. It's always better to live in the long term, rather than living in emotion.

I've been there. Emotion equates with bruises, heartache, passion, moment. Sadly, not all of us can turn off our hearts when the time comes for it. Its a difference in us. This may seem a bit off, but a lovely film about this is Equilibrium, without the action.
