Any experienced journalists 'round here?

I have been offered a double degree at a University - Journalism and International Studies. I applied for the Journalism degree simply because I want a job doing what I love (writing) with a steady income. The problem is that I am concerned that I may not have the right temperament for such a career or that I may find it boring. All I want to do is write, but I can't see myself enjoying writing about some of the inane stuff you find in the newspaper.

So, my question: Is there anyone here who has experience in the field of Journalism? What are the pro's and con's and would studying for a degree for four years be worth it?

I could also look into a BA in English, but I have no inclination to become a teacher, so I don't know where that would lead me.

Thanks for any advice,
Fool

I have a degree in journalism and I'm only just starting out in a freelance writing career. If you love writing for writing's sake, I don't think journalism will be for you. Journalism isn't about writing, it's about reporting. The style is strict and formulaic and it's sometimes difficult to establish your own voice within it. Add to that, the field pays poorly on the whole, unless you attain a position of respect.

You should try writing for your college paper, or a local to test-drive the journalism idea. You may find that you have a passion for it you didn't expect, even for the inane stories.

On the other hand, if you can marry journalism with something close to your heart, you won't be at all bored. Eg, I did music journalism for a few years and loved it. BUT, you need to be passionate and knowledgable in your chosen area of journalism, and you need to write well enough to get noticed.

My housemate was a journalist for a local paper in England. He was gifted when it came to writing, but each time he applied for a job on one of the big papers in London, he was turned down before even reaching the interview stage. From what I saw, he loved his job, but it didn't pay what he deserved and it was a really competitive field. He was willing to sacrafice money for doing what he loved. I was not. Are you? Is it what you think you'll love?
