Posting Stories and Copyrights
Perhaps this question has been asked before, if so I appologize in advance, however, I've been looking around have not been able to find the answer:
Does anyone know about the legality of posting ones writing here? I've heard in the past that depending on the type of forum one posts their work to, they are then copyrighted to that forum, and cannot be used for future publication.
I wonder because a specific writing prompt here drew my attention, and I did write something, and would love to contribute, however, if I were to decide to expand on this piece at a later date, I would like to know that I have to option to do so without worry.

You have copyright of your posts here (assuming it's your own original work).

Correct, my own original work.
So, I just want to be 100% certain. What you're saying is that because I am posting it here, the copyright for anything I post belongs to only me?

Well...you might need to go one step further, though. I agree, yes, that the copyright is your own. However, not all publications will publish something that has been posted on a public website because it may be considered published already, therefore First Rights to the piece are no longer available. That's just something you would need to check into before or as you are submitting something. To alleviate that issue, though, I think you can safely post in the members-only forum, since it is considered a private viewing area.
Do others have a definitive answer to that?

Yes, that is the generally accepted principle. If you post to a public website you can consider your first rights gone. If you post in a members-only area you should be good. This was the reason that the members only Writer's Workshop area of the forum was created.
