Writing Contests 101

Hello All,

I heard there was a separate section on writing contests on this forum, but I couldn't find it. If someone wants to point me in the right direction, please do and let's nip this thread in the bud.

Having said that, perhaps a new thread ain't that bad on an idea. Allow me to start:

I'm making the jump from hack writer/published journalist to short story/essay/non-fiction writer. I have a couple completed short stories, but I'm being thwarted by that daunting task of actually getting published. I figure one way to break the literary publishing ice is to try writing contests. What I'm realizing now, though, is that the turn around response time for most of these contests is, um, "exceedingly long". Granted, I may be impatient, but if I'm trying to sell a story, I'd like to know in less than six months whether I should be shopping for another venue.

So, my first question is: Is it kosher to simultaneously submit to several writing contests?

Anyone have any general suggestions on writing contests?

Thank you,

Chris

The contests subforum was recently merged into the Writer's Resources subforum, so that is where you will want to go if you are looking for contest threads.

In most cases it is not, but you always want to check the guidelines for any specific contest.

I would think it would be kind of cool to have some contests judged by some of the mentors or moderators...I know one specific I reason I have in mind which may be a little less mature of me than usual (need bragging rights over someone) but I think its just a good possible idea in general.
