I knew that I wouldn't get as many comments by posting it off-site, but the fact that it's a fanfiction story is part of the reason why I chose to. I really like this site and wouldn't want to get it in any trouble, even if it's unlikely.

Frankly, I can take fewer comments if it means having a place like this to learn from.

Other people getting away with it is never a good excuse for wrong-doing. Earlier this year a woman author - and her POD publisher - were sued for what was effectively a fanfic novel using, I think, star trek characters. It was a particularly interesting case as the POD publisher obviously had little or no knowledge of the content, so it's a good analogy for fanfic published on a site like this.

Bottom line, for me, is that we should all endeavour to treat other people's work and copyright with as much respect as we would expect others to show ours.

It was a dodgy Star Wars novel, Mike. And, despite her site being taken down, and told not to sell copies of the book, I think she still persists, although I can't remember my source on that one.

There are other places for fan fiction.

My personal opinion is that writing fan fiction is like eating vomit, and reading it is worse (note, this is not necessarily the opinion of the management and staff of this site).

I wouldn't go that far, but most fan fiction is crap or literary masturbation. It seems like whoever writes it generally doesn't practice actual writing first, they just want to continue the adventures of Buffy (Where she meets Luke Skywalker or something crazy).

Okay, I'm going to admit it here... I have written a couple of "fan fiction" stories though, but those were very short and for my own fun. One was sort of requested by my girlfriend because she wanted to know what happened to a character off screen. To be honest, it was really fun working with characters I liked, but I'd rather be working on my own original stuff.

I think any real writer should use fan fiction like aspiring TV writers use shows that are already on the air, they use it to prove that they can work with something well known. If you want to write Star Trek novels, it’s a good way to practice, but as far as I know they usually only hire people to write those books that have published other non-fan fiction stories.

That being said, there's a lot of places to read and post fan fiction that aren't here.
