censoring posts
I would like to know if it's possible to let the general public know if someones original words have been censored by a modorator? I certainly would appreciate it.

no, with vbulletin and these technolgies, if you have access to the sql database, or you are an admin, it's easy to censor. wikis are harder because you have to either modify the php or hack the database, but it's definitely possible for anyone ambitious. for the most part, you have to go on faith. I will email you if this is censored
lol
were your words censored? kad burm* came the closest i've seen with his rudeness on a few posts, and he wasn't, so I don't see why you would be.
if you're not talking about forums, I would suggest writing for a "competing" paper or publication source. don't expect an apology, but that they may pay for it, if you're looking for revenge. my science teacher said the ny times only apologized to a scientist for discrediting his work of propulsion systems (that didn't "push on anything", as they said) when people arrived on the moon.

I've been censored on other forums, and I take a dim view of it. It hasn't, as far as I know, happened to me here. The mods all seem pretty cool - I've had an occasional PM telling me to back off if I've crossed a line, which is fine, but not had a post censored.
Have you?

If a post has been edited by a Moderator, it will say so at the bottom of the post, just like it does if you edit it yourself, and a PM is sent. If a post is deleted, the author is notified by PM that it has been. Either way, the author is made aware that their post has been edited and the reason why.

Ty--No. Moderation is done in private. Notices are sent to those who are affected, and it's between them and the staff. It's kept private for a reason. If one of your posts is edited, you'll receive a PM.
If you're asking simply about edited posts, at the bottom of a post it will say who last edited it. Usually, it's the original poster, but if you see a mod's name, it means something inappropriate has been removed.
I hate the word "censored." I think of it more as housekeeping.
EDIT: Selorian ... You're too quick for your own good!

I have had posts both deleted & edited & not once received a notify of it being done. While I don't object to what was done (I had probably stepped over a line) the lack of notification caused more problems than the original posts.

I find that odd ... I was under the impression a notice was always sent when moderation occurred--except in certain rare cases where it's pretty clear the author wanted it moved or deleted.
It's in the rules and guidelines, and it's the way I've always done it.

Thank you, JM, for bringing that up. PM or notification of some kind is suppose to be sent whenever any moderation is done, just as Aevin said. If that isn't the case, then it needs to be corrected.

Well I never have had a post edited (I think) but I have had a new locked. I asked because when midlandmuse said his was censored. I was just wondering why they would censore it, usually (I thought) they just locked the thread. Most of the time the mod's explain why they lock a thread. But some times they don't. I wish they did every time.

imrhati, your post title was edited because of profanity. The last edited message gives the reason, which mod did it, and when. That should be just as good as a PM in this particular circumstance. If you look at the bottom of the post, you should see:

Just a reminder:
When you join WF, you agree to follow certain rules. When these rules are broken, moderation/editing of posts takes place. By joining WF, you effectively agree to follow all the rules...not just the ones you like. That's really all there is to it. WF isn't a democracy. The owner, Chrispian, gets to set the rules, and to participate, you are obligated to follow them or suffer moderation.
