I hate subforums! They seem like a fine idea now, but when it's time to click on the smaller links below each forum name to see what's inside it, you find you almost never venture in the subforums, and that little work is posted outside of them.
The system we have is more or less as good as it's going to get for a forum this size, I think. Too many categories (it seems we have too many as it is anyway) and it becomes a nuisance scrolling on the front page. Sorting everything into subcategories and little is found anywhere.
I have yet to find a forum that successfully implements subforums. That doesn't mean WF can't, but I personally do not think it would be a wise change.
Remember that the forums is built on simplicity. We switched to vB and suddenly had a ton of options and modifications available to us, but that doesn't necessarily mean these are good changes or that they're appropriate here.
Merely my opinions.

i agree with ilan. subforums... *shudder* too much navigation (humans are lazy...) will put off a lot of people. it's nice, in my opinion, to have everything right there on the plate, so to say.

maybe it's not such a bad thing to ward off the lazy people with subforums? just a thought, don't flame me. but who wants feedback from the person who can't be bothered to navigate through a subforum?
that said, i see the point and value in simplicity, especially considering how cluttered it could become. it is already a bit cluttered in my opinion, as well, so adding subforums could create even more chaos.
i'll still stick with my vote for subforums though.

Dittos to the subforums. Back when I was full-time admining a forum of my own, subforums were a valuable tool for navigation and orginization. My members didn't have any problem with them. *shrug*
I submit to you all, a poll shall take place! We'll poll the entire forum! We'll poll all the members!
...That didn't sound right...

I, for one, would. Critiquing shouldn't involve a maze just to get to the thread you're interested in. I like to see all the short stories on one page so I can quickly choose the ones that interest me; I would be far less apt to do that if they were divided into "flash," "long short stories," "etc," and I like to think my critiques are, at the very least, worth reading.

How many subforums did you have, and what kind of forum was it? On some forums it makes sense; there are categories that simply don't interest people, but on a writing forum were few can say they hate an entire category it would just be a hassle for everyone (it would be different to have genre subforums, which I think would be better), because that doesn't dictate what kind of story it is.
If we must have subforums, please do it by genre. That way people don't have to view all of them as they would if it were by length and such.
In fact, if it's by genre then I don't think it's such a bad idea.
