Would it be possible to create forums for newswriting-type issues; current events, political commentary/editorials (bound to generate some strong input), and movie reviews?

Perad is an unknown quantity at this point
For current events we have the debate forum.

Movie reviews go in non-fiction.

Newswriting-type issues i assume means you want advice, that would go in the advice forum.

'the lounge' is also a good place for discussing current events and/or news-related items... it's a somewhat less confrontational forum for eliciting opinions, as opposed to stirring up loud'n lively debate...
