Fan-Fiction, changed my mind.
Having nothing to do, and feeling to bored and uninspired to write, I opened up google, and typed in "Fan Fiction" for some reason.
What came up was a huge number of websites filled with utter and complete crap.
It was so bad it was funny.
THat's why I suggest we make a small thread for fan-fiction.
1) It'll help clear the rest of the forum.
2) Reading that stuff just makes you feel good again about your writing. Seriously.

It'd also help keep the serious forums clean.

The following is from the Anne Rice website;
http://www.annerice.com/
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM ANNE ON "FAN FICTION"
Anne has posted the following message regarding fan fiction: "I do not allow fan fiction. The characters are copyrighted. It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters. I advise my readers to write your own original stories with your own characters. It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes."
Many authors do not approve of fanfic, would you? I can see some taking it as flattery, but some people get kinda twisted with it. I would be morally offended if someone used one of my characters and portrayed them in a way that I didn't intend for them to be. Think of what you put into your writing, and imagine this:
The beloved Harry Potter series, which has entertained and prompted not only the reading, but the writing of people everywhere, is probably one of the most popular themes of fanfiction. One website I visited, portrayed and insenuated homosexual, pedeophilic and bestialic relationships between not only Harry and his friends, but teachers, creatures, parents and adults featured in the series.
Although most of it is harmless, Anne and those who feel the way she does have a valid point. We did not create these characters or the world in which they inhabit, what right to we have to use them in a way that they were never intended, and publish (on a forum or any other means) which could damage the integrity of the characters in question?
I still maintain that fanfic is a way for young people to develop an interest in writing, but in respect for the authors being copied, I don't think it should be shared with the public.
Of course, that is only one authors opinion, and many other authors may not have a problem with it.

I made the suggestion of using fanfiction before. I just thought it would be fun( which it is, actually. I found this out by writing some star wars and Matrix stuff.) But thats all it will be--fun. It's great for your own entertainment, but not much else. It's good for polishing your writing skills, but write too much of it and you'll start to lose the most important tool of any writer: The Imagination

No, I just suggested it to lift people's spirits if they feel bad about their writing.
Fanfiction is usually crap because most people who write well prefer to write their own things, which is the best possible course.

My characters are mine. I'd be pissed off if someone else used them, because I am the one and only authority when it comes to deciding what they will and will not do/think/feel/say.

I wouldn't mind if someone wrote fan-fiction to do with my characters. I believe there's a thread here where people complained when an author describes a character too much, without room for imagination, and you change your idea of the character anyway? Think about it. If you're the same people who will say no to people doing that to your characters, why are you thinking you can do that to another authors'?
I think some authors are too personally attached to their characters. Yes, your idea of your characters is probably right, but why are you refusing to let other people write their different ideas of the character? Your view is just your opinion of your character, you cannot expect EVERYONE to view them the same way.
It would interest me greatly to see how other people could use my characters. Think of all the new ideas and possibilities you could use.

Yeah, I wouldn't want someone to screw around with my characters in anyway they feel like just for FanFic. Some FanFics are indeed interesting but... I wouldn't like it to be done with my own. My friends have tried to make senarios with my characters before and I stare at them like they're insane.
"My characters would never do that!" I think. But hey, that's just me.

There's a bit of a difference, Lisa. Describing a character and what he/she looks like has little bearing on a story. A mental image is just that—an image. Deciding what that character actually does within the story is a different matter completely—I doubt there is anyone who reads a book and decides to re-write it in his/her head with completely different situations.
Plus, fan-fiction actually gets published somewhere. Usually online. What you do inside your head is your business, but don't go using my characters from my worlds in your own stories.
Fan-fiction writers should have to ask permission.

It's not my opinion, it's my character... I create them. I don't just lay out the groundwork and tell others to mold them into something, they are mine. Only I know the complete psychology behind them. Other people can copy what I've written down if they like and add their own "opinion" to how the characters should act, so long as they rename them and make them their own.

I agree with Hodge's sentiment.
I don't think I can get too attached to my characters. That's a little bit too much like saying I'm too attached to my children (yes, I AM aware of the difference).
When you create something, something that is purely from your imagination, I think it's a little offensive for someone else to come along and re-write it. Nobody can really predict what my characters are going to do in any given siutuation but me, that's why they are my characters.
I am against fan fiction for all sorts of other reasons, and this is just another one.
