I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean? If we locked it it would get out of hand? The whole point is to keep the all debates to a certain length, so that views are not repeated. On most debates the vast bulk of comments are 'I agree' with the popular consensus.

i.e. most people cannot see anything wrong with gay marriage, as already shown most of the comments were 'who cares?'. Doesn't really make for a debate.

The idea would be to make people focus and say more than one sentence, it would also create more focus on really bringing up the issues involved rather than chaff comments.

The problem with debate forums is the psychology. Most people who have not been in a situation where they have had to seriously consider their personal views get rash, heated and opinionated with no regard for others feelings. People want to feel safe in their views and don't want them challenged, hence you end up with arguments or everyone saying the same thing, boring. I am trying to formulate an idea where people become focused onwhat is being discussed, rather than trying to make a warm fluffy show case for how wonderful everyones morals are.

You know, with all the hype here I decided to set up my own debating forum. It's still under major construction and will take any suggestions. You're all welcome to join and it will not be related to writing forums other than the fact that some of you here will (hopefully) join over there. Suggestions encouraged!

Yeah, I'd love a debate forum. Unfortunately, there'll always be a number of immature members who ruin it for the rest of us...

Perhaps a debate forum could work if it were under heavy moderation. Personal attacks and pointless flaming could be deleted...

Actually, that might not work either, because then there's the matter of where to draw the line between a valid statement and a flame... arguments could erupt about that...

Not fair. Me likey debatey...

Well, I'm trying it out. If all goes well, the forum I set up should become a decent online community with mature members. Moderation is required but would not be too hard to acheive along with the help of the members.

I had thought about setting up my own forum. I'm glad someone actually took the initiative to do it. I hope it works well.[/i]

Currently there is a spot where debate has taken place. Alex, I disagree with you and feel there is an avenue of opening up debate topics. There will always be immature people no matter where. It's a fact of life.
