Hi Scott,
I've spotted you asking similar questions in one or two places, but this seemed to be the best place to answer you...
Responding: You can reply to any post on the forum, by adding your own comments (as you have done already). If you want to contact someone without posting a public message, the forum does have a private message feature, though I haven't used it yet, so I can't tell you how well it works.
Deleting: I don't think there's any plan to automatically delete older messages, but to be honest, as a message gets older, fewer and fewer people will read it.
As long as you are logged in, you can edit or delete any of your own posts and replies on the forum at any time. I don't think that affects replies anything you've written though, so if people have replied to something you've written, deleting it may make things look a bit weird.
By the way - this message you posted above, you won't be able to delete, because you weren't logged in when you posted it (it's says "guest" in the username).
If there's something you desperately want to delete, as a last resort you could contact Chrispian, the guy who runs the site. If you've got a good case, he'll probably be reasonable.
The challenges section: Firstly, not sure if you know this (it's not that obvious), WritingForums.com is directly linked with Lit.org.
With that in mind, most of the activity in the 'challenges' section here has been in the topic called 'The Thread'. All the conversation in that topic is related to a story that has been written on the main Lit.org site. The first post in that topic has a direct link to story that you can click on, and the story itself includes the instructions on how to join in.
I hope that helps answer your questions. If I've missed anything, I'm sure others will dive in with their thoughts as well.
All the best.
