A gothic teen story
I am she who stalks the darkness, intent on searching out trouble, finding it before it finds the innocence. I hide under a cloak of black and watch from open doorways, derelict bus shelters and any other hiding places from creatures that could rip you apart as soon as they saw you. Only I know the dangers and only I must save mankind tonight.
The great underworld ruler, Satan himself, has returned to the surface in disguise of an average man, hard for him because of what he is but this way he will not stand out. This makes my task harder, but I am ready. I have been waiting for this night all my teenage years.
In my bedroom, after my parents are asleep I climb back out of bed and make myself invisible in black trainers charcoal jeans and a shirt of midnight before throwing the cloak over my shoulders and stealthily creeping down the stairs.
I have a plan but it may not work as there are thousands of men who resemble the devil in disguise, and he is only one of them. I slip a bulb of garlic, a wooden stake, a silver mirror, holy water and a bible in a bag that I keep under the cloak then stepping out onto the isolated street I whisper, “I am ready”.
My journey takes me through the avenues to downtown clubs that beat with loud electric music, rock bars and pubs where a lock in keeps customers still buying and cheering the pool.
“Not here” I say, looking at one of them. My intuition is telling me to move on past, slowly and quietly. A sudden wind points me towards a western street and I whisper a slight prayer thanking the Maker for his aid in my battle. He knows what I have seen and tonight hr is fighting beside me. We stalk on soft toes through streets banging with noise until we find the entrance to a smoky bar. The man at the door doesn’t see me, because when I am like this an average person never can. So I walk straight through the turnstile and into the bar while he talks to some young men outside.
A million people, chatting, dancing to loud music fill a tiny room. I squeeze through strangers until I reach the bar. Now I wait and drink.
Watching the room from behind a soda as people come and leave until it’s the end of the night. I haven’t seen him, it can’t be true that he is invisible. Then I realise there’s a man with hair as red as blood at a far corner table talking to a group of hoodies. With strong footsteps I walk to the table and put down my drink, pulling up a seat. The man looks at me.
“Can I help you?”
“I know who you are.”
His eyes twinkled dangerously.
“Why don’t you tell me?”
“Because then you would know what was going to come. None shall be hurt tonight.”
The hoodies are looking at my get up and laughing, wondering if I came from a graveyard. I’m tempted to cut them new faces to laugh with but I will only hurt the enemy. Mortals can live.
“Go home boys. It’s past your bedtime” I say softly.
The Devil laughs.
“Since you don’t know who I am then call me Aaron. I run this club. You don’t tell my customers to go home. I want to see you outside on the street in two minutes.”
I freeze inside but I know he is the right man.
“I’ll leave you boys be” I say softly. “Enjoy your night.”
The hoodies are looking at me strangely.
“Fuck you” one whispers as I turn back to the bar and order another soda. I’m around the far side where he can’t see me, even if he was the Devil he could not because of what I am.
I ask the bored girl behind the bar now most customers are out on the street, “The manager guy with the red hair?”
She shakes her head and points to a tall blonde guy collecting glasses.
“Did he say he was?”
“Yes. But don’t go near, I know who he is” I tell her.
I walk back to the table. The red haired man looks anxious seeing me approach, the hoodies turn and stand to surround him.
“If you want me you must take first” says the Devil.
I reach for the lighter on the table and flicker it dangerously, not wanting to hurt but frighten off these boys. But they aren’t scared so reaching for a glass bottle off the bar I smash it open, and now everyone watches.
The hoodies look around and one pulls out a knife but I expected this. With a twist and flying kick I knock the knife out of his hand and down to the floor.
“Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to play with blades?”
“Didn’t yours tell you that fire was my tool?”
The Devil caused a flame to come bursting out of his fingers.
“I am your nemesis. I must destroy you” I tell him.
I drop kick another hoodie to the floor and am in front of the Devil. The third abandons his posse when he sees the others are down.
“Return to Hell” I tell him.
“Who are you to order me?”
“You don’t know me? You should, I bring the horsemen of the Apocalypse. I am she who watches the sky for signs and I will write you out of the world if I must. You know the rules and they are not in your favour. I would not chance your fate against mine for the Master is fighting with me.”
He laughs scornfully and spits in my face.
“He has already abandoned you to fight alone.”
“No. He is invisible to your eyes as you refuse to see good. You only see me because I have experienced your evil before I became what I was. Once I murdered an innocent puppy out of the temptation to break rules. Now, I continue to pay the price by finding and destroying your world when it comes to earth. It is not my choice of destiny but I shall do as am commanded for I am nothing without the Master.”
His head burns with rage and I reach for the garlic, cross and holy water that I kept on me.
“Inawrthy scata, nevaca yukasta, shikata.” (Unworthy soul, never return, destroyer).
He moans in pain but still stands.
“I do not know your tongue” he hisses. “It is of the new world not the old. You can speak it well and perhaps I would reward you if you taught me your knowledge.”
I shake my head.
“My knowledge came from the Master. You shall not be granted it.”
The Devil screams with rage and the lights starts to flicker in the bar. The glass table next to me breaks to pieces and the windows fall out but I remain standing.
“It is not true” roars the Devil.
I throw the holy water over his head and the fire is out but he laughs scornfully.
“You want weapons, I can give you then.”
“Over my dead body. I will not accept dark weapons. I am a being of light, you should fear me.”
“I shall not fear you.”
He shoots fire bolts out of his fingertips but I duck behind the bar. Nobody else is here, we are alone.
“Why should you destroy us?”
“It is my duty. God cast me out with the job that I would tale care of those who harmed. Would you rather murderers, rapists and leaders like Hitler were in Heaven? I take care of those who disrupt the earth. You shall let me do the work God gave me.”
I stood against him, unblinking.
“It is my duty to protect the earth and look after its inhabitants. I will ask you again to leave this Earth and return to Hell.”
I took the broken glass in my palm and walked across the room to him, dodging fire bolts and the hypnotic glares of snakes that came crawling out of his shirt sleeves. Walking around him as he stood on the floor I began to circle chanting “Born out of fire return to your kingdom.” Three times I circled knowing he could not move, he was petrified of my presence.
The lights flickered once more and he was gone in flames.
Every night I fight monsters, many worse than the Devil but I am always aided by the spirit of my Master. Some call me Ending, others Light Of Gold, the Burning Rose or the Dark Destroyer. Here is what I call myself though, it was the name given to me. I am the Night Guard and you must not fear me. The world is not yet safe, the Devil was only returned to Hell but one day it shall be free of his work. That is my quest.
