An Eternal Friendship

All my life, I was a grade-A 'Scaredy-cat.' Everything scared me, and I could never face my fears and better myself. So I went to a psychologist, and she said the root of my fears was coming from a cave from my childhood, where my dad and my two best friends were killed in a small cave-in. So, I went to the cave one day to face my fear.

I stepped into the cave. It looked a lot smaller than it did when I was a kid. It was 10 years since I was last there, and I was going to venture to the very end of the cave. I took a deep breath and stepped into the cave.

It wasn't so bad. When I was young I thought the darkness was scary, now I knew there's nothing to be afraid of. I smiled to myself, taking more and more steps forward, when, all of a sudden, it got very cold in the cave, which was strange because it was summer and I wasn't very far into the cave.

I took more steps forward, quickening my pace. I was going to face my childhood fear of this cave whether I liked it or not. But as I did, it seemed to get colder and a strange sense of fear began to set in.

I got very scared and put my had on the rough surface of the rock wall of the cave for balance. I wanted to face my fear and get out of here, fast, before my doctor appointment later that day. So I started running, but it didn't help. Running only made me more anxious which, in turn, made me even more scared.

But then I sopped running and walking all together. What was I scared of? A ghost? There's no such thing.

I chuckled to myself. Scared. How uncool. I said aloud, "How stupid."

Suddenly, a deep, hoarse voice yelled, "What did you call me?!"

I turned around and saw a man standing behind me. He was wearing a raggedy old windbreaker that looked as if it was pecked at by rats for a few years. His pants were the same way. His face was dirty and unshaven. "Uh, I didn't call you anything, sir."

He smiled and shook his head and said, "Don't lie to me. You called me stupid. Yiu think that, just because I died, you can make fun of me. All you living are like that." He sighed. "Being a ghost isn't much fun. I don't even have a friend..." His sad voice trailed off.

I then realized that this man was the embodiment of my fears: death, having no friends and having to live that way, and being sad forever. That's why I was afraid of the cave all my life. So I smiled and said, "There's nothing to be afraid of."

"Huh?" The ghost said.

"I'll be your friend," I said to the ghost.

So I returned to the cave everyday to talk with my ghost friend. And I knew that, even in the afterlife, I'd have a friend to go to.

"Friendship is eternal," my friend said one day. Then, we smiled.

And with that comfort, nothing scared me again until the day I died.

THE END
