The Wall (644 Words)

Author's Note: I just wrote this one night, and found myself unable to delete it and with the need to post it. I didn't really think it fit in the poetry corner, and I couldn't find think of anywhere to post it. So, I figured short story, though I'm still a tad sceptical if it belongs here. Nonetheless, if you feel that this should be in another area, my bad.

The Wall

He remembers.
He remembers everything that happened. How it happened.
The only thing he doesn’t understand is why.

"What was God trying to teach him?" he wondered.
It doesn’t matter. It is in the past. He knows that one must learn from the past.
He has a responsibility to learn. So he can keep it from occurring again.

He must build a wall.

And the wall began to be built. It was quite an impressive wall, it was built quite high. It seemed as if nothing would get through. When asked if it was enough, he would say just say “more”. Everything must be protected.

“But this cuts off the outside world!”

“It matters not,” he said. “The wall must be magnificent, if it is to protect.”

The wall was impressive. But he began to wonder. From inside the wall, he wondered if it was really necessary. What this would mean for him.

Every so often, he would watch someone peak over the wall, hoping to get a sight of him. He would smile, and let them get a glance.
It does take a lot to go over this wall. Anyone who manages to get over should be allowed to see in. But to let them in, well, that was a different story.

One day someone walked by the wall, and glanced at it.
A beautiful girl.
She looked at the wall, and stood in front. She called to him, asking if she could see through.

At first he was skeptical, but her voice seemed to stir up something deep inside him. Her voice shook him to his bones.

She glanced over the wall, and smiled. It was a smile that brought him to the past.
He looked at the wall and felt sorrow. It held him from everything outside.

It kept him away from her.

So he began to rip down the wall. But how can one take down this wall? Many have tried before, but to no avail. This wall was indestructible.

Or so he thought.

The girl knew.
She walked right up to him. He felt her arms go around his neck. She pushed her nose against his. The snow fell around them, in the darkness. It could only be a dream.

It seemed like a dream.

And she kissed him.
A simple kiss.
Surely this could do no harm?

Little did he know how something that seemed to be so insignificant could actually be so powerful.

One little kiss.
A simple little kiss.
It took down the wall.
Every single brick.
Every last brick.

He watched the wall go down, but smiled. He knew it was for the best. She would protect him from what he feared. She would help him fight it.
This could work.

So many before her could not take the wall down, but he knew that this was a new age.
A new beginning.
A new life.

He was wrong.

With the fall of this great wall, came all the evils he tried to keep out. They came so quickly. He felt himself drowning.
Gasping for air.
They came for him. And when he looked to his side, for the one who would help him fight it, she was gone.
Disappeared.
And he knew not of where she went.

He awoke, battered and bruised. His head was spinning, and he could not breath. He got up, feeling his body ache. He looked at the destruction before him and knew what must be done.
