Delusions of Grandeur

((About 900 words, I was trying something with formatting and it's effect on the story.))

Delusions of Grandeur

I am nowhere, where I belong. That’s what I was told throughout the better part of my childhood. When I reached the end of my former self, a snap could be heard; a faint but sure cracking when my conscience crossed. Now the clarity has come, taken from the outer reaches of a repulsive world filled with understanding and ignorance. Sleep now my friends, all of my friends; rest where I lay thee in thy mercifully bloodied pool.

I rolled from my bed onto the cold metal floor of my fourth floor apartment. I remained on the floor, face down, until my stomach and chest went numb. I forced myself to stand and get dressed, did I really have to go to work? No, I didn’t have to but I went anyway because I was too afraid to let go and be what I am, what I am… I stepped through the threshold of glass to the permanent plastered smile of a phony, rage provoking secretary.
I pulled the stainless steel handle with ease right from the glass door. For the first time the woman with empty eyes behind the desk changed her expression from that of apparent inexplicable joy to a distorted face of terror as I walked toward her. A wake of fire trailed my feet, my eyes dripped a dark red, my hands, my minions from a paradise of pain…
“Good morning!” Mary the secretary said excitedly. Startled, I quickly cleared my throat and responded.
“Oh, hi.”
“And how are we this morning?”
Closer…closer to ending this repugnant display of dishonesty. The desk burned to ashes and faded away before my infernal presence. One hand around her throat, I…
Giving her a blank look for a moment, she said, “Is everything all right?”
“Oh, yeah, sorry… I’ll be heading to my office now, have a nice day.”

My day droned on in a blur of dull gray colors, I know I did work, but I don’t know what I did. I had never questioned the systems that I lived in. I should have sooner, sooner is better, much better.

This was life until that life ended with a spine chilling crack. Passage itself was the revelation of all revelations, where life ended, life began, and I discovered my new philosophical standpoint on why I was so harshly thrown into a frenzy of indifference and sorrow. I became the resurrection of chivalry, mercy, and all that is His glory…My glory.

I had a cause, I had the means, I had the will, I had the strength… All I needed was a beginning to my journey. I brooded on my quest for the remainder of the evening, sleep is for the weak…

I didn’t go to work the next day, I saw no reason to have any relation with what I “had” before my birth as a God.
“Look at those ignorant fools walk the streets with the unenlightened mode of thought that will destroy the very essence of all that lives. Appreciation and respect are your salvation, as your savior, that I shall provide.”
“Can I help you sir?” The coffee vendor looked irritated by my unresponsive demeanor. Patience, apparently was not one of his virtues.
“Repent, and enter the field with dignity in your eyes.” The vendor dropped to his knees, bowed his head in submission, and folded his hands…
“No thank you, I was just looking.” I walked further down the street and began to plan my first life-changing “sermon”.

My plan was to sacrifice a hopeless soul to the many for a future of meaning.

I stuffed the Colt Peacemaker into my bag and left my apartment. I aimlessly wandered down the street not looking, or caring where my feet led me.
This woman looks like she would never understand the meaning of what has happened and what will never be if she is allowed to continue her existence among my subjects. I have to be sure, “Excuse me ma’am, do you know what time it is?”
“Who are you?” She’s proving me correct, but I am a patient God, I will give her another chance.
“I’d just like to know what time it is.”
“I don’t know who you are, but you’d better leave me alone before I scream for help.” That’s it.
I unzipped my bag and removed my pistol, pointed it at the red-haired woman’s forehead and said, “Now you will feel the wrath of a God in all it’s supreme splendor.” As I pulled the trigger slowly ignoring the woman’s cries, something unexpected happened… Shrapnel shredded the skin on my side throwing me into the chip rack. The cashier… an ignorant fool, I can’t blame him, he didn’t know I am here to save him…

I have become the noble sacrifice; unexpected, but necessary. I will be known as the martyr who gave worth to human life, a noble sacrifice indeed. All who witnessed and hear about what I have given to them will stop and become an independent, free spirit. I close my eyes now forever, but not in vain… not in vain…

Hey sigg,

A nice story of epiphany. Mix in a little madness for taste. The story is one thats been told quite a bit and you don't really add anything new plotwise.

Your writing of this overtrampled subject was good.

Did the cashier throw a grenade?

I liked the bible-like quotes in the story. The formating kept the story very readable.

Thanks!

I liked this a lot. I think what made the story so good was the ending; the twist. I certainly didn't see that coming. Well done.
