A Shot of Knowledge

A Shot of Knowledge
*updated*
The knowledge factory

Herman Howastein was a neuroengineer. The nuero part of Herman’s job was to understand how the human brain worked. This part of Herman’s job was nothing special, science had been trying at this for centuries. This was the easy part of Herman’s job, all he really did was keep up to date with what the top neurophysicists were doing. Not to say that Herman couldn’t do that part of the job on his own, just that the engineer part of his job was so important, he dedicated all of his time to that. In short it was Herman’s job to make the human brain more functional.

After eleven years on the job, science and technology had evolved, while the field of nueroengineering stood still. But now, after so many years of waiting he was ready. Throughout the life of an individual, they only use a fraction of a percent of their potential memory. Herman decided to base his work on that fact.

“So friend”, started Bill, “What have you got for me.”

“I’d rather go ahead with the demonstration then try to explain it”, said Herman. He wasn’t exactly what people would call the talkative type.

“Go ahead. Here is your volunteer, his name is Bob.”

Herman saw him sitting in a chair in the corner. Perfect, he looks stupider then I’d expected, thought Herman. “Come here please.”

Bob came over to Herman looking nervous. “What is Pythagorean's Theorem?” asked Herman.

“I don’t know that one.”

“That’s all right, do you know my name?”

“No, we haven’t met.”

Herman, happy with those answers, “All right please hold out your left arm, this will only hurt a little.” Herman pulls a hypodermic and injects Bob with a clear liquid. “This will only take about five minutes to kick in.”

The three men wait silently for six minutes before bill says, “Okay, five minutes is up. What now?”

“Bob”, says Herman, “What is Pythagorean's Theorem”

“Uh, A squared plus B squared equals C squared. Hey doc, this must be some magic learning drug you just gave me”, says Bob with a look of amazement on his face.

“For this demonstration, your knowledge is only temporary. You will begin to forget it within the next ten minutes, but it would be just as easy to make it permanent”, explained Herman.

“That’s amazing, how’d you do it?” asks Bill.

“I’ll tell you after the rest of the demonstration. Bob, what is my name”

“Herman Howenstien, and that I will definitely not forget.”

“What is Bill’s social security number Bob?”

Bob spits out the number. “But that I will forget.”

“Yes you will”, says Bill angrily, “Can he read minds.”

“No, I just put the internet in his brain. He knows everything that was in the Internet as of nine last night. It would make more sense if we put a library database instead of the whole Internet. By the way, you can go now bob.”

Bob left, while Bill discussed the technical side of this knowledge serum with Herman. He went straight to a bar, just like every other night.

Herman did another demonstration the next day, on national television. It was even more dramatic then the original one. An ordinary class of third graders was observed during part of their class. After every one of them was injected with the serum, they were correcting their teacher throughout their grammar lesson. The class asked the teacher about a broad range of topics, from rocket science to philosophy. The teacher looked really stupid, but she was in fact much stupider then these third graders.

In response to the demonstration church officials made statements like, “Howenstien is playing god”, while a government official was quoted as saying, “This is an insult to our public school system”, the general consensus was, “This is not in America’s best interest.”

The next day Herman Howenstien died after falling down the steps of his southern California home, or so said the police report. Many were happy that this issue was shoved under the rug, but little did they know that another scientist had made the very same discovery halfway across the world. Their government was very happy about this discovery. The nueroengineer was thanked privately by his leader, Osama Bin Laden.

Chris Miller is an unknown quantity at this point
re: memory

Hey sean,

Not bad. Held my interest. Funny at times.

A number of grammatical errors, e.g. should be:
"Pythagorean's Theorem" or "The Pythagorean Theorem"

The demo was a little underwhelming, as was the bar thing. But the concept was intriguing. I get the feeling you wrote it without really knowing where it was headed, got tired, and decided to end it abruptly.
