Does anybody know a good collection of fantasy stories?
I have to review a set of short stories for a course I'm doing. Could someone suggest a good set of short stories that are fantasy based and more aimed at children? I dont think I 've everread the Enid Blyton stuff, so could someone tell me if her work is good?

first real fantasy for kids... Lewis Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland"
Next big hit... Tolkien's "The Hobbit"
Lately, it's Rowling's "Harry Potter"
Those are the biggest and most historically significant three.
You could also review shorter Grimm's fairy tales... thats kinda fantasy, or Madeline L'engle's "A wind in the door" thats pretty short. Alternately there are the works of Roald Dahl, like "Charlie and the chocolate factory" You have a wide range of choices. I'd say head to the nearest library and talk to the children's librarian.
Good luck, I hope you enjoy this assignment

Enid Blyton's stuff is good, except everything other than The adventures of Noddy are mostly aimed at an older audience. However, "The far away tree," is an excellent example of her fantasy work for younger readers.
May I suggest Susan Cooper with her "The dark is rising," series. I absolutely loved this growing up and I brought myself a copy to own and read as an adult.

Yes but a set of short stories is what is being asked for. I suggest any collection of the work of Peter Beagle. Brilliant fantasy and suitable for children or adults.

I would recommend the short series called,
Legends : Short Novels By The Masters of Modern Fantasy
There are three editions which contain short stories and novellas by
Stephen King, Terry Goodkind, Robert Silverberg,Raymond Feist, Orson Scott Card,Anne McCaffrey , Robert Jordon, Terry Pratchett,Ursula K. Le Guin,Tad Williams,George R.R. Martin and I am sure I missed someone.
all the biggies.
All the stories are independent of their other works. And having read all three books, would recommend them for someone looking for a new writer in the gendre or looking for an old freind.
