To See Again

To See Again

Chills lived within the eyes gazing beyond me. Lavishly, tears departed from the pupils. Numerous eyelashes bounced upon each eye, wiping the tears away. Lurking among shadows, the eyes vanished and reappeared. Unaware of me, the eyes mingled with the sunlight, revealing a bronze face similar to mine. Similar could not truthfully describe the person and me, for we were identical.

“SISTER! SISTER! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?” I cried, happy to reunite with my twin sister, Bell, in such a strange setting. The wind howled, sending our silky, red hair into the shadowy abyss.

The eyes never located me, moving from side to side, trying to decipher my emotions. Another tear found its way beneath her chin, “Why are you upset? Is something the matter?” I questioned, for my twin sister never was one to cry.

Her gentle face became nervous and uncertain,“Is that truly you, Sunshine?” she smiled at my old nickname, Sunshine.

“Why, yes. Do you not recognize me?” I shuddered, wondering why my sister was asking such a foolish question.

“My eyes…,” she sighed, “They cannot see.”

I gasped, overwhelmed by terror, “You’re… blind?” My eyebrow rose in confusion although I knew my sister spoke of the truth.

I whirled round, not finding her in my vision. Miserably, the wind sung ancient tunes and caused me to shiver, for I had not dressed in accordance to the weather. Beneath the caliginous shadows, sparkling eyes appeared to be glaring at me.

“What are you doing?” I shrieked.

“Forever, I will stay here, living in the darkness. Shapes cannot enter my eyes, only darkness,” Bell let a tear slip from her eyelash, freezing before it reached the ground.

“Bell,” I whispered, “You still have four remaining senses.”

“Yes, but… sight is the most important of them all.”

“In the depths of your mind, sight is living. For you have the memories,” I sounded reassuring, despite my fright.

“Memories? Memories! I have few. Although they are enjoyable.” her lips formed an abnormal smile.

“Envision them. Let the memories become reality. Smell the familiar scents. Taste the violent air. Hear the joyful tunes. Feel the surrounding friends,” I let these words float from my mouth.

Tightly, my sister shut her glittering eyes, reaching her memory and imagination. I knew of the wonderful memories Bell stored inside her mind. Easily, she could envision them.

“Are you using your senses?” I asked, trembling with excitement.
“Yes. I am,” her face brightened.

“Now, see the vivid sights,” I paused, “Do you see them?”

She revealed her beautiful eyes, staring straight at me, “Yes, I can see again.”

I understand what you are trying to do with the beginning, but the first few lines seem over-the-top to me. Other than that, I love the sentiment of this piece. Nice job.

Thank-you for taking the time to read this, Daniela. I agree. The introduction is probably too much. When I was writing the opening paragraph, I thought the story was going to be different that it turned out to be.

This is nicely written. I could see it as part of a larger project, though it works as a stand-alone piece as well.

A touchy question: did you think of reading this story to a visually impaired person? It would be interesting to know how they would relate to it...

Zaoshang, thanks for the reply.

Hmmm... that would be interesting... I do not know any visually impaired person, but I wonder what kind of reaction he/she would have, for I know barely anything about losing one's sight. I merely guessed of the emotion and feeling in this story.
