Dare.... my actual first Short Story finished!!

"Dare"

It was an eerie, dark night, when Sala and Joshua returned home, almost too dark and murky to be real. The clouds puffed out over the moon, and the shadows lurked in the darkness. Houses creaked with an ambition of being haunted by demons who never quiet vanished the earth, yet they were not afraid, they were more than human.

Dares, the evil of many kinds, and the daunting of all troubles began to whisk around the candlelit room as Sala sat patiently for the cookies to be done so she could vacate this senseless child- like discussion. Josh, on the other hand, was intrigued and if not for the crack in his voice, would have spoken up and accepted the adventurous deal. His face turned pale, with dark creases shadowing his eyes, as he was told of the tale. It was, like many others, the tale of the dead, and the liege of the unknown.

It was a murky night, one like the present (as always) when an older man, so weak with depression approached County Field Graveyard in hope for comfort in the tombstone of his mate. He wandered aimlessly through the untelling graves, tripping stone after stone in the vacant lot. Though there was nothing present but cold bodies, he knelt next to the lot of choice, intent to bring his dear beloved wife to life to save his shattered soul. His heart, though still pumping, broke into pieces, as his body lost weight and he descended on his beloved's grave, his head piercing against the top of the tombstone. Blackness was the only visible hope it seemed, but much to his dismay he awoke in the same position as previous. The ground beneath him felt oddly wet, and he figured he missed a small drizzle. He felt his clothes, but they did not have any evidence of a valiant mist upon them. Seeming that his apathy would save him, he continued sulking upon a body now belonging to the dead. Only now did he notice the small knife-like marks cut into the grave. He was lower than the ground around him! Feeling himself sinking into the muddy ground, he glanced for one last look at the cresant moon, but it wasn't there. Not even attempting a fight, he allowed for the slow whisper of death to engulf him. A sudden bark gleamed sunshine and hope to the man. A small puppy approached, but in an instant it was gone. It was Rex, his dog as a child. Oh, how loveable was that dog to him. Finally feeling life grace him with a gift, he raised his body, but his strength was not enough. The pull from beneath him was stronger. Was he to be buried alive? For the first time he felt regret instead of sorrow, and when he attempted to scream his voice was hoarse, caused by a sudden blow to the back. Broken skin, and bloody hands took grasp of his body, strangling him. As his body felt immense pain, he felt satisfaction. His heart sunk into his stomach, as he gasped in his last breath of air. A knife tore through his throat, and he was dead. Would his wife do such a thing?

Sala raced towards the cookies, as if to avoid a hidden ghost. Of course she had to hear stupid ghost stories, of course! Shivering, she slipped each fresh- baked morsel into a basket, returning to her brother and his friends. As she watched her creations devoured before her eyes, she felt a pain in the pit of her stomach. What if this story was true? What would she have done in the pit of all her pain? She glanced at the one thing that kept her and any girl alike happy- Jake Alderman. She was not one of those boy- crazy ditzy creeps, but instead a girl who admired beauty in a man. Daydreaming concluded with the tease of those around her referring to her glances towards the framed picture. She sighed, shrugged the matter off, and vacationed in her cozy bed for a well night's rest.

Josh, overwhelmed by all the current emotions felt it a necessity to show his friends up. The story wasn't real, the dead are not part of the living, and that is simply an overused controversial statement. Sickened by the details, but admiring the request to spend a night lying on the grave of Ms. Kara Valaquei, face down with his head fully engulfed in the mud of a freshly spattered rain, he accepted. He was for once interested in something not forced upon him, something unlacking like the quality of sports, something mysterious, and something to show that he would fit in perfectly with each and every male stereotype.

The night was over just as it had begun. Sala and Josh soon found themselves ready for a friday morning, one cursed in its name. It was friday the thirteenth! Sala, believing that there could be nothing good to come from it, and wore her raggy jeans and ugly sweater, planning to avoid being in the sight-stream of Jake for at least this one single day. Josh, on the other hand, was in complete excitement from the night spent researching, and the night to come. Sala agreed to come, even if it just meant she would protect the one thing that meant most to her, her sibling. She couldn't afford death in a life already so unpredictable and dramatic. So they awaited the night, nervous, excited, and drowning out the words from each class with the poetic words of urban legends.

Finally, the moon took its place behind the clouds, and the day in its history as the second dark, murky night in a row. Sala packed her things in effort to make a quick exit when the parents vacated to the world of infinite dreams. Josh packed limited things, such as a sleeping bag and his radio. Without Sala he would be lost, but he was far from admitting to it.

Approaching the graveyard seemed like an unwarranteed death sentence. Each tree acted as if Death himself was only a step away. The air smelt like the odor of all forty of their classmates in a grueling gym class (oh, and without deodorant). Each step felt like a punch to the heart, and each sound made seemed as if they would suddenly become an alarm clock for the death and they would awaken, angry. Effortless, they found her grave, the historic Ms. Valaquei, whom pulled her husband to his own demise. They felt the wet, muddy, earth beneath their feet, and Josh dove into the ground. He felt the cold, hard ground beneath him, as if it were breathing a thousand cold breaths into the each strand of dirt. His heart pumped as he saw blood next to him on the ground. Screaming he stood up, leaving the mount of the grave. Sure enough, the blood was from a creature. There was something hanging limp from the tree. Whatever it was, was dead. Sala approached it, and fainted suddenly with a scream.

"It's dead," she cried, "he's dead."

"Dead, who?"

"That man.... hanging .... please let's leave..... PLEASE!"

"Oh, those dirty rascals, thinking they can trick me out. This isn't real, Sal....calm yourself!

Dead silence resumed itself at the foot of the grave. As if the demons spoke to Josh, he threw himself back upon the grave, making sure to knick part of his head as a tribute to the legend. Warm blood dripped down his face, joining the blood of the other man. He felt himself sinking, and heard a barking in the distance. The barking grew louder, until he could see a shadow in the distance, racing around, like an uneducated puppy. Gleeful that some of the story was coming true, he began to sob. Unsure of what overcame him, Sala backed away frightened. Josh began to shake uncontrollably, piercing the earth with each movement of his frigid body. Sala ran towards a tree, almost believing this to be a nightmare. Josh moaned, as if possessed by the devil himself, half crying. He had reached the peak of his insanity when suddenly the earth was trampled by another shocking murder. The once seen bloody hands reached themselves, as if alive, out of the ground grabbing him by the waist. Sala was immobile, frightened to death. Josh simply laughed, as if this was some twisted virtual video game.

He yelled out, "Who are you? Is that you Kara? Why did you kill your husband? My friends need to know these answers, he bragged like a second- grader.

Josh's mouth began to foam with green fluid, and his nose bleed continuously. Sala watched her brother slowly drift into death. What arose from the ground was a sight like no other. Before them stood a huge man with tore, bloody, skin, and an unrested heart.

Suddenly Josh screamed, "George? Was the affair true, was she your girlfriend before their marriage? Are you George? Be at peace!"

With those three words, Sala's brother was killed by the dead. Convinced in what she saw and knew, she believed the police would understand her. IT was George, Kara Valaquei's ex-boyfriend before the sudden marriage. But, where was Kara? Was she really dead? Cursed with these wretched thoughts, and haunted by the dead corpses of her beloved brother, who went insane for the chance of acceptance. Her small legs pounded against the ground, until a sudden weakness overcame her, and she fainted.

Finding herself in a hospital-like bed, Sala ran down the hall to a sign that was decisively labeled "Police."

"Excuse me, sir? It's my brother... he's dead... I know we weren't supposed to be there, but we went to get him companionship... George killed him, not Kala!... Sir you gotta help me! Please?"

"Ahh... Not again Ms. Valaquei... go back to bed... I've had enough of this dream...talk about it with the psychologists in the afternoon...

"What did you call me? Ms. Valaquei was it?"

"Yes, Ms. Valaquei, that would be you!"

"But, sir, my name is Sala and I'm only a child!"

"Sure you are Ms, you look like a grown woman to me!"

"What is going... on?"

"I'm sick of explaining it to you, you are mentally handicapped. You think your a child, but your a grown woman who could survive on her own if only she would own up to her age. Your name is Kara... Sala is what your father would call you as a child, as sort of a humorous joke. Talia, will you please take this woman away from my desk?"

"Yes, sir!" Talia responded orderly.

As Sala was dragged away she took a glance at the sign, "County Field Mental Health Center for the Mentally Ill.

So, you see, figments of imagination can often overcome ones power to reason correctly. In this case, irony brought this story to a unique and somewhat safe ending. Whatever you do, don't let halloween get the best of you, and stay safe, for you never know when the barking dog will attend you, and when you will slowly slip into insanity.

A Nearly Perfect Circle
spooky

8/10 Very good for a first story. The slow start with the dare and continuing on at a reasonable pace until the truth in unveiled. I think that future stories will yield good results.
