    Introducing a character in disguise

    Aloha,

In the opening scene, the main character is in disguise and even gives a false name. I like to write for the reader and do not necessarily want to give away the identity of the main character until a few pages later. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Thanks.

Most would advise not to do it. Trying to play cute with the reader is really pointless. You'd actually be writing "against them".

If you must, I would NOT use the alias as a character tag (Always think in terms of the credit listings) I'd use HANDSOME COP or FAKE BUM or whatever you've got going.

But pulling suspense and trickiness on professional readers doesn't really make much sense.
