Well, if it is something you can breeze over in the dialogue you can put it aside and move on with the rest of the plot.

too many flashbacks can feel like stopping and starting over and over again
Stopping and starting can BE the momentum of the film.

The "story" emerges as we move through. It doesn't have to be told all in one linear sequence.

A film like "Twelve Monkeys" is not violating some sacred order...it is determining the way the story gets told.

I think half the films I've seen lately start near or at the end (in two or three cases when the main character and narrator is already DEAD) and jump back.

It's funny that most people see these films and think it's a cool, innovative, hip, etc. way of spooling out the film.
But show them a script with the word flashback on it and they start coming up with reasons that's a bad idea.

Have you ever heard somebody (other than a film student) say, "I couldn't enjoy the film because it kept jumping around in time and I got lost and confused"?

Same goes for VO, by the way.

Lin, while I understand where you're coming from here, "Are flashbacks good or bad for a story" is a whole debate in and of itself. Right now we're supposed to be critiquing the idea given in the first post and deciding whether some of the background is necessary. Have you an opinion on that, just so we can get briefly back on topic?

Why don't you stick to "supposed to" and not waste time playing Forum Cop and I will respond to other posts as I see fit. Think that'll work?

I will when you will. Devils advocate. There's already a forum for debates, open a thread there.

Boy, you're just not very shy about trying to tell people what they should do, are you?

I've have a suggestion you might find more enjoyable. Go fuck yourself.

Nobody needs you to play teacher.

Let me point out that your bitchy/bossy posts about what people should talk about are....oh, the horror...off topic.
