Hi,

In the following example, how do you understand the words "into phone"?

Does that mean that character is seen speaking into to the phone to someone at the other end of the line, or that character is heard through the phone (and in this case, an "O.S." should be added).

It seems to me that there a potential semantic confusion with these words, that I've seen used quite often.

If you have Joe talking to someone in the room AND on the phone, then use the paranthetical. Like so:

Joe picks up the phone. Larry walks in.

JOE
(into phone)
Hello?
(to Larry)
Hang on, Larry.

Larry lights himself on fire.
