    Treasure Hunt RPG

This RPG is slightly different in format from recent RPG’s so please read this entire post if you are interested in joining.

Thank you to Slayer and Blossom who have agreed to help me.

    ***

Your character is responding to the following classified ad, which ran on several online job seeker sites as well as some print version local papers around the world:

    I s l a n d B r e e z e s
Exciting employment opportunities for a limited
number of lucky applicants. Travel to remote
waterfront resort location. All expenses paid.
Housekeeping duties and some outdoor work.
    Very competitive compensation plus incredible
bonus package. Sense of adventure, analytical
ability a plus. Send application letter to:

The contact information is simply an email address for “Employment” at a company called Velga Enterprises.

(DON'T post these! Please send to Foxee via private message by February 25, 2008)

To join the RPG your character will submit a letter of application for the job, which is also your application for one of the ten open spaces of the RPG
. Slayer, Blossom, and I will select the ten players. These letters will then be posted as the intros of the ten characters in the RPG

Once you are officially a player you’ll post your profile (we may request that your character be able to fulfill a particular household job since that is the cover for the treasure seeking) in the profiles thread and I’ll reveal the next part of the RPG scenario.

Some other stuff you need to know…and the rules of the RPG:

Posts will be scored with feedback scores with points given on:
    - spelling/grammar
    - plot progression/support/timeliness
    - the effectiveness of description/action/dialogue
I am not going to agonize over this, simply give points according to what I think when I read then post the scores at the end of the body of your post.

Space is limited due to the feedback aspect. The RPG begins with 10 open positions for players and, if we have people drop out we’ll probably keep it to 6 players or under. New characters will not be added unless there is an overwhelming need for them. PM for information on whether characters are needed if you want to join later on in the story.

    Rules:

    1. No godding

    2. Do not control another player’s character*

    3. Each post word count should fall between 50 and 800 words and be written as though you’re writing a fiction novel. Conversation posts may be shorter.

    4. Conversation posts may interrupt the cycle of play (you may post more than once in the round if you are in a conversation) but should be wrapped up in four or five posts, please.

    5. Let’s keep it moving. When it’s your turn it would be great if you could post within two days.
*Any player who doesn’t post within five days when it is their turn will forfeit that round and their character will be NPC’d. They can once again control the character if they write a post in a timely manner in the next round. If you’re going to be gone please PM Foxee, Slayer, Blossom or put a post in the Treasure Hunt RPG Profiles & Affairs Thread so that we can cover your absence.

    6. Post scores are final. They are really just feedback for your own improvement and reflect my personal opinion of your post. Don’t agonize over them. You can tally them for your own amusement if you feel competitive. Or ignore them. It’s up to you.

What do you think? Interested in giving a mystery/adventure/treasure hunt RPG a shot?
Edit: Please feel free to post any comments or questions (or 'hurrah there's a new RPG's in this thread.

Glossary of terms for those new to RPG’s:

RPG: Role Playing Game. In this case written like a fiction novel with each person writing material that solely pertains to their character(s).

Round: when each player takes a turn that’s one round.

NPC: (Non Playable character) Characters that can be controlled by any player.

Godding: To play your character in ‘God Mode’ – essentially all-powerful, perfect, omniscient, and invincible. Annoying and incredibly boring. Don’t do it.

Looks like fun. Bit of intrigue, dash of adventure. Gonna have to find some time to join up.

It doesn't hurt to write the letter and submit it. We've got one letter in already which makes me very happy.

    Being a teenager,
    Just one question really:

Application? Anyone know any formidable formats I should or could use, or just some basic points I need to cover.

Sorry, its a rather dumb question but I have absolutely no idea what one looks like.

    Tom.

    Yeah, suppose it is.

    Good questions, Tom!
This letter is an application both for your character to the employer and how you'll be selected for the RPG. So the writing should be a sample of your character's voice (how you'll write for the RPG) and should indicate what the character's applicable experience is for the job(s) at hand.

You really have very little indication from the ad what exactly will be required other than house and grounds positions...but there is some indication that there will be more than that.

Hope this clears up your questions. If not...ask again! I am very happy to see the letters coming in. Thank you for your interest and try not to get bored before we move on to the next stage of the RPG.

Hmm, I hate nagging, but I really can't get my head around the concept of what you mean by giving a sample of the characters voice. As in a small story about the life of your character, or just some basic facts in a 1st person persona.

Sorry once again, its probobly a stupid question.

No problem, Tom. Here's what I mean.

Try to step into character AS the character to write the letter. It will still be an application letter detailing desirable traits for the job. If he or she is a more strait-laced person the letter will sound very formal. If they are casual in the extreme then that letter will sound very different from the strait-laced character's. If they are uneducated, they will used smaller words (unless they misuse large words as an effort to cover that fact). A baker, an accountant, a butler, a maid, and a sommelier will all have very distinct letters in tone as well as in content.

All I'm saying is that if you know what your character is like and you pretend to be that character (which you will do the entire way through the RPG) then the letter will sound like the character wrote it. Not necessarily like you did.

    Does that help?
