Leap Day challenge! I know, it's long past leap day, but it's a good challenge anyway.

Write three vingettes about a familiar historical or popular fictional character (such as Harry Potter or someone from Lord of the Rings). The three things have to be something that DIDN'T happen to them, but if it had, it would have competely changed their lives. At least one of them has to take place on Leap Day, and the Leap Day must mean something special.

Each vingette must be as close to 300 words as possible. No smaller than 200, no bigger than 400.

My reply to this relates heavily to Harry Potter so if you're not familiar with the HP world, don't even bother reading.... just answer the challenge!

Lily Evans, nine years old, came running into the Evanss living room. PETUNIA!!! YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!! I pelted around the corner and ran smack into her, almost knocking my fragile little sister over.

    What is it?

Look!!! Lily handed me a letter. There was nothing particularly special about it, except the paper was a bit heavier and the writing was in emerald-green ink. It had my name on it, but no return address.

    Whats so special about it?

Just read it and see! She was almost bouncing up and down, she was so excited.

    You opened my letter?

    Well-

    Addressed to me?

    Well, yes-

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU-

    Just open it!!!

I guess Lilys excitement was catching. I opened the envelope quickly (now that the seal was torn) and drew out the papers inside. The paper was really weird...

Miss Evans, you have been accepted into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry... Lily, is this some kind of joke? It wouldnt be beneath that little prankster to pull a trick like this.

If it is, it wasnt me!

Our father, a laid-back sort of guy, came ambling in from the kitchen to see what all the fuss was about.

    What is it?

I held up the letter. He read it and shook his head. Its got to be some kind of joke. Theres no such thing as magic. But just then my mom came in the door, home from work early. She threw her briefcase on the couch and took the letter, scanning it with her emerald eyes.

And then she said the last thing I could have expected. No, its not a joke. This is real.

They say that leap day is a special day. Im not so sure about that, but then Im not so sure about a lot of things magical, even though Ive been studying at Hogwarts for six years. Its true there are plants that only bloom on leap days, and creatures that can only be found on leap days, or creatures like thestrals normally only those who have witnessed death can see them, but on leap days everyone can. Hogwarts goes a little strange staircases, hallways everyone gets lost on leap days. Four years ago, when I was a second-year, I ended up getting lost in the dungeons for five hours before Professor Mordecai, the Potions master, found me.

Today, I was hoping to get by without getting lost, but Hogwarts seemed to be even more discombobulated than last leap day. I was wandering the halls, looking for the North Tower Divination room, when I ran into a tall, pale, blonde man wearing all black and looking like he was completely lost. Im sure he wasnt a student, he was a bit too old, but not by much. He must have just graduated a few years ago. He was VERY handsome, and by the looks of it, very rich.

I asked him who he was, and what he was doing here...

Lucius. Lucius Malfoy. Im here to talk to Professor Mordecai, but I seem to have forgotten the effect that February 29th has on the castle. Would you happen to know where the Potions room is, Miss...

Evans, Petunia Evans. And yes, I was just there last period myself. I had been. I drew myself up and tried to look older than seventeen. Its this way.

Well, I thought I knew where it was, but as it turns out, we BOTH got horribly lost in the Potions dungeons and had to be rescued by Professor Mordecai. Wandering around the Potions dungeons was much more interesting with this beautiful, wildly flirtatious man. As he was about to leave, he turned back to me and bowed elegantly. Im sure we shall be seeing more of each other, Petunia.

I was awoken from my sleep by the loud, though beautiful, doorbell. Lucius probably heard it too, but he just turned over and went back to sleep. I sighed, smiled, and got out of bed. On the way out of the room I picked up our eleven-month-old child, Draco Alexander Malfoy. He was still sleeping, but I liked to hold him as much as possible.

At the front doors, there was no one in sight, and I was about to go back inside when I noticed the bundle left on the doorstep. It was a baby, Lilys child, I realized. I suddenly knew something was up. I put Draco down, picked up little Harry, and it was then I saw the envelope. I put Harry down next to Draco and read through the letter and then I was glad Lucius had not come down. Lily was dead. The Dark Lord was destroyed and little Harry had done it.

I knew that Lucius was involved with the Dark Lord, but I wasnt sure how much or how little. Whatever it was, I knew Lucius would not be willing to keep the Boy Who Lived, as Harry was mentioned in the letter. For a minute I teetered on the edge of my loyalties which was stronger, the loyalty to my husband, or the loyalty to my family?

I looked down at the two toddlers sitting close to each other, with just enough of a familiarity between them to make their differences striking. Light and dark. Evil and good. Suddenly, little Draco swung his arm protectively over baby Harry. As my heart melted, I knew my decision had been made. I would leave tonight, with the two babies, and get as far away as I could, and then raise them as best as a loving mother could.

This was a really well written piece. I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, and througly enjoyed reading this! I do have one question though, about the challenge.

At the threat of sounding unintelligent, what the heck is a vingette? In all of my years of school (I am a college graduate), and all of my writing courses, I have not once heard of this word. Could you, or someone else who happens to read this please explain this to me so that I can complete this challenge. Thank you so much!
