    Song Lyric Challenge

I thought of a challenge on the way to work today. Write a poem using ONLY lines from your favorite songs. You can only use one line from each song and you can use as many songs as you like.

You weren't the only one thinking about writing challenges Mr. Chrispian.

*smiles* Though I'll decline to enter this particular contest, I'd like to note that the valedictory speech a year or two before my graduation was made of song quotes, almost in entirety.

Cadmus: Poor child, like a white swan warding its weak old father, why do you clasp those white arms about my neck?

    Poems from song lyrics

How about this one? It's a bit trickier than you'd think. If anybody's interested the lyrics are from Pink Flag by Wire,Street Wave by Pere Ubu,Second Dark Age by The Fall,Halleluwah by Can and Heart Of Darkness by Pere Ubu.I tried not to use the same band twice, but oh well.

I was sold up the river to the red slave trade
The stores were gathered, the plans were laid
I rode a street wave right by her side
And I could see the city, this city coming round
As I wormed my way in to the heart of the crowd
I was shocked to find just what was allowed
    It’s a second dark age
No Psalm Sunday or any day
Searching for my brother, oh yes I am
As everything I see is so underhand

    In the early morning rain,
there's a tree where the doves go to die.
    Say goodbye to Alexandra leaving.
I'm not saying I'll be true, but I'll try.

    Black day in July.
I said to Hank Williams, how lonely can life be?
It's one for the devil and it's one for christ.
    Ribbon of darkness over me.

Lines from Gordon Lighfoot and Leonard Cohen songs.
    eight songs in all.

The metal crusade will conquer all
Sons and brothers fight or fall
    Metal machines, unchained and free
This is the way we want it to be

Hear the call of the wild in us all
Battle hymns did sound the call.
    Born to amplify
Rock `n Roll will never die.

AC DC, Manowar, Hammerfall, King Missle

Sneaky! That's great!! Were they single lines from songs? I recognized a few of them but not all.

    Raise your Fist

    Welcome the age of chivalry
    glorious, we´d rather die
never ever be outdone in bravery
raise your fists to the sky.

We are the voices in the dark
Pounding the world with a fist of steel
The realm where everyone has got the mark
Doing dirty deeds under churchbell's peal.

    For years shunned by society
back to back, ready to fight,
    creating our own destiny
    ride into the night.

I like this assignment. Browsing metal lyrics is really fun. Those lines are from Hammerfall, Runnin Wild and Manowar. One line only from any song.

You are browsing lyrics to compose? No fair! I was doing it strictly from memory.

Hm, i checked on the opening. No ban on browsing, just use your favorite songs, but still, you made your point. So it was unfair, but never intended.

Take me down to Paradise City where the grass is green and the girls are pretty (Paradise City, Guns and Roses)
And don't forget who's taking you home and in whose arms you're gonna be (Save the last Dance for Me, Emmylou Harris)
for you might know of an original sin (Original Sin, INXS)
in this ever changing world in which we live in. (Live and Let Die, Wings)
Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shi* to me (Fight The Power, Public Enemy)

    OK, it's only a half-baked limerick...I tried

if you see my reflection in a snow covered hill
    the landslide brought it down
and they all wonder why i wear a frown
i heard it from all the boys in town
honey, all you ever do is bring me down

    Those with crystal glances
    Dreaming a thousand morbid dreams
    Dying men in bewildered soliloquys
    And all beyond the twilight
    No turn is left unstoned

Antaeus, Celtic Frost, Opeth, Old Man's Child and Raven ..
    Judged by the blind, not nearly;
Just face the Sun when you prey.
