Role-playing is quite simple really. Create or adopt a character and learn what they think about certain things. That way you can react as they do to situations, giving it a sense of realism.

Also, I'd suggest not making you own RPG first. This is because joining others first will give you some experience and teach you which kinds of RP work well.
    "Who are you people?"
"We were sent by He who is called I Am!"
    "Cute."
    "Worked on Moses."

I've done a bit of roleplaying in my time. Here's some of what I remember.

Good roleplay focuses on two elements: storytelling and character development. The problem many beginners have is that they think it's ALL about their own character's story. They're partially right, but they tend to forget that other people have their own characters in the game as well. Here are some points to consider about excellent roleplaying:

    * It's about give and take. As a general rule, if you "take" a major concession for your character in a scene (i.e., insist on winning an exchange), then you also need to concede something so the other player can walk away satisfied with the exchange as well.

    * Likewise, remember that your character isn't going to win every exchange. Be willing to lose face occasionally. God characters who can't ever lose a battle (or even lose face) are boring, contribute little or nothing to a story, and are frankly annoying. Be willing to let someone else shine every once in a while.

    * When you post your character's actions, this is often referred to as "posing" (or it was when playing in the MUD / MUSH tradition anyway). Do not pose other peoples' characters or responses. You wouldn't like people making your character's decisions for you, so don't do it to others. This is also known as power posing or god modding.

    * When creating your character, don't just focus on your character's advantages and abilities. A good character has at least one major weakness, and probably at least a minor quirk or weakness for every couple of advantageous abilities.

    * Remember the character development. What will he (or she) learn along the way that makes him a better person? How will their tortures, triumphs, and failures mold them?

    * When setting up a new scene, don't forget to describe the setting and situation. This can be done more or less like you're telling a story, just don't write a whole book in the process.

Edit: Looks like I necro'd this one. Guess I'm used to these types of forums being more active.

Don't worry about being new, and how things are done, although Lone Wolf has given you some sage advice, most of which I will use myself.

Bazz... though the corporation has nothing against a bit of shameless advertising, it is preferable that said shameless advertising be done with live victims. (Check the date this thread was made )

My best advice to you is to start by joining a good, quality, well rounded group -- that will help you along.
