Have a little more fun. Whatever hit the chest penetrated enough to allow air in, creating the infamous "sucking chest wound" where the depression of the diaphragm bubbles air in through the hole instead of into the lungs through the mouth.
Requiring somebody to hold a compress or whatever against the wound constantly until surgery. Held tight enough to block the flow of air, but not enough to hinder the rising of the ribs.
The old adage, Getting shot sucks, but getting shot in the chest sucks the worst.
