Detective Question

How does a homicide detective go about tracking and capturing a killer on the run who continously kills? What methods and tactics does he use? How does he do it?

I think your question is too open ended, for example is this a Bonnie and Clyde type killer, a modern terrorist, a sexual murderer of prostitutes, or what? In some cases the detective would know an identity and be trying to track it down, in others that would be what he would be trying to establish. The method of killing would affect the type of clues left for him to work with in the latter case. My feeling is that the more you refine your question the more you will provide your own answer.

Additionally, and don't quote me on this, I believe that once the killer leaves the state it becomes the business of the FBI.

Not sure exzctly what you mean, so I have two questions.

1. Are the events specific to the USA?
2. Are you referring to psychological profiling?

If you are looking at the second you'd better be set to do a whole bunch of reading.

Surely that's what your story should be about.

Not if it's not a detective story
