"Forgotten" memory is somewhat contradcitory. But, in the spirit of the question, one method is to find a spot near the memory and work from there, or even, simply write down "I remember/I don't remember" until something comes out after that. Repressed(I think thats the actual term) memories are a very contraversial subject in psych, because of all the issues involved with therapist influence, and several psychological factors with the general effect of generating false memories. But if that doesn't matter to the story, you could try hypnosis, some form of free association... Have you trued googling this?

What else would you forget, if not a memory?

Hypnosis is a big thing too--all the rage with 'suppressed' memories.

I am a big fan of hypno-therapy. But I would not take seriously ANY "recovered memory" coming from hypnotic treatment.

I would guess that the therapist would bring up things to the patient trying to jog his memory. Also, he may show him pictures of the incident in question or time period.
