Castle architectural term needed

Does anyone here know the name for the front porch of a castle? After the moat, before the gate? I cant find it in books. At least not yet.
Any ideas?

Well, it's definitely not porch. :-P

This site might help. Seems pretty comprehensive.

From what I remember in an architecture class (many years ago) most castles didn't have a moat and were much simpler than Hollywood leads us to believe.

it has a nice ring to it, and it is close enough in meaning to what I wanted, so I think barbican it is.
