Psychics
This is probably a strange topic to ask people for knowledge on, but I've got a novel idea in which the main character is a small town "psychic" (but doesn't really believe in it). Anything you guys have to offer about psychics and their business would be appreciated--rituals, marketing, usual clientele, stuff like that. I mean, if you've ever been to a palm reader in New Orleans, or whatever, that experience applies.
Thanks!

I actually did go to a palm reader in New Orleans one time when I was wasted. It was dark and cliched, with beads in the doors and all that bunk.
She actually used cards rather than my palm, and basically just fed me some bullshit about my life being at a point where I felt like I was wandering and lost. It was a pretty obvious read based on my current state of intoxication and my age.
I went to a voodoo guy one time who was much better. He doused me in some kind of alcohol and beat me with these big leaves and blew fire and had chicken blood and shit. That wasn't psychic though...
There was a good movie that Sam Raimi did about a small town psychic. It had Giovanni Ribissi and Keanu Reeves in it. Can't remember the name.
Also maybe research the psychic tests the CIA did in the sixties.
Penn and Teller also did a Bullshit episode on psychics that revealed some of their styles and techniques. Might be worth checking out.

There's a great show called 'Psych' in America. I'm not sure if you get it where your from, but it's hard to get it in Ireland so I have to download. But it's not really about psychics as such. The main character is hyper-observant, and can pass for being psychic. But it's worth taking a look at.
Sam.

Mishki, Check out "Medium" on CBS and there is Psychic Detectives and a few other Real Life shows like that on as well.
OH--and look for stuff by Sylvia Brown or John Edwards.
