I need some reading material.
Alright. I already asked my Creative Writing teacher, my english teacher, and my grandmother (book of the month, much?) if they could give me some suggestions but they're not quite getting my question.
I'm looking for books with rivalry plots -- namely those where one character is challenged by another.
The reason is I'm writing a story where one character's leadership is challenged by another character, but the challenged emerges the victor.
Actually, now that I think about it, it kinda sounds King Arthur-ish. King Arthur is challenged by Modred, Arthur defeats Modred.
Anyway, know any books along those lines?
Previous suggestions (which don't really fit the bill) are;
1984,
The Count of Monte Cristo
Julius Caeser

Thanks!!!

Try anything from the Rumpole of the Bailey series. Yes I am bias because I do enjoy the books (and took my online alias from it). That begin said, most of the work is in short stories, thus you need not make a great time investment if you don't want to. What I like most about the series, is that while Rumpole is constantly challenging the leadership, fairness, and ethics of those around him, he doesn't always win. I'd be happy to suggest specific stories if it would help.

I don't mean this in an offensive way but based on what you said your plot sounds very basic or stripped down to the bare essentials. Instead of looking for a modern novel with the same plot I would go back farther to some simple tales of rivalry. Check Grimm's Fairy Tales, Bullfinch's Mythology and the Welsh Mabinogion. All of those have several examples of what you're looking for. I'd say that your guess about King Arthur wasn't too far from the mark.
Actually, now that I think of it, I believe the Mabinogion is in Bullfinch's Mythology so maybe you can kill 2 birds with one stone; altho I would suggest another translation (Jones, Ford, or Gantz are all better).

Take a look at Bernard Cornwell's series on vikings and King Alfred. Like "The Last Kingdom". Bonus...he's one of the best writers for combat scenes you'll run into.
