Finding old reviews

I'd like to know where or how I can find old book, movie and album reviews that came out at the time of the books, movie or albums in question.

For example: if I want Rolling Stone's review of the first Velvet Underground album how do I find it? Is that going to require me finding a library that archives back issues of Rolling Stone and then visiting those libraries? If I visit these libraries will those back issues be indexed in any way? Are those indexes available anywhere else (such as online)? What if I don't know the exact date or issue of the magazine in which the review appears? Surely there must be an index of some sort which lists reviews by date, magazine, author, etc?

Idealistically, I'd like to find an index of reviews that will enable me to order only the magazines I need via my library's interloan program. If I can't do that I would at least like to be able to visit the holding libraries and go right to the correct issues without having to flip thru a complete set of Rolling Stones.

(Also, please don't send me links to Rolling Stone's website or any Velvet Underground websites. That's just an example. I have several other reviews I'd like to find as well so I need some sort of general system.)

Thanks all.
