It'd seem to be the easiest way would to be on cellphones with bluetooth headsets... Maybe with a push-to-talk button affixed somehow to the handle bar, that way they could communicate en masse like a conference call... I'm not sure how coverage would be depending on where they are... Maybe some sort of wireless walkie talkie...

Get your head down and ride. You should be concentrating on beating their sorry arses on the road, not chatting about what they had for the fucking dinner!

Writerdude, this isn't like you.
You know what forums are like, and you know what this one is like. Everybody posts for a reason. You wanted information and you got it. For free because people took the time to reply.
Somebody else might be here just to clown around on his work break. It doesn't harm you if they do that.

By funny, do you mean things like commenting on the President of a country that you don't even live in? What exactly has President Bush done again Norway?
We had every right to declare war on Iraq, if we didn't have the whole world jumping down our throats along with the extreme liberals in our own country doing the same, we could have won the war long ago. Something that people forget to mention in the argument about the war with Iraq is that they violated a previous peace treaty with the US many, many times by shooting at our planes. We should have gone to war with them a long time ago, it's a pity that we didn't act on their peace treaty violations earlier, but we had Clinton before, and he was busy paying the terrorists to leave us alone. If that was a general comment on Bush being stupid, then it's STILL none of your business. Yes, he's not the smartest person I've ever seen and he's a terrible orator, but he was the lesser of several evils. There are virtually no good people in politics, because it's not a field that good people go into. Why don't you worry about Norway and keep your political commentary about the US to yourself.
As for your original question, the answer should be obvious with a minute's thought, or a google search like Backward OX recommended. Headsets inside the helmets would be the best option, hand signals as an alternative, depending on when your story is set and the financial means of the 4 bikers.

Now THAT would be funny if it was so fucked-up.

Sorry WriterDude I have just had a sleepless night thinking about how stupid I've been with these unhelpful suggestions.
When I suggested Semaphore that was plain ridiculous, you need to use both hands and wave a couple of flags in an eighty-mile an hour slipstream.
And Smoke Signals that takes both hands and you'd have to light a fire on the pillion, not to mention the eighty-mile an hour slipstream, that's idiotic!
So I've come up with something sensible where you don't use both hands or light a fire...Carrier Pigeons. I hope that is helpful and I can get a decent nights sleep.

(just to ensure the staid and sombre ambience continues)
"Nights" is possessive case and takes an apostrophe (before the s of course)

As a "biker" I can give a little insight. It's been my experience that the type of bike a person rides relates to what kind of gear they use/wear, which in turn would dictate how they would communicate.
Your typical "Harley" rider RARELY will wear a helmet at all, and if they do it is more of a skull cap then a full helmet. Your true "Hog" riders embrace the freedom a bike provides. They want to be out and exposed to the elements and nature. They want to feel the sun and wind on them. Granted you do get your occasional weekend warrior type. The White Collar Exeutive that owns a Harley and rides it on the weekend to get away from the family. These kinds of people would wear all the protective gear and be the kind that would use a walkie talkie system. Just a note, typical Harley riders would either yell to each other, use very basic hand signs (like pointing), or pull over to talk. This group loves their bikes to be as loud as possible so even shouting is not always an option.
Next you have your sports bike guys. These guys are much like the Harley guys except these guys are in it for SPEED and to look good for the ladies, and not really about the freedom. Their bikes are rather uncomfortable to ride as you are bent over the gas tank. This kind of rider would also rarely wear a helmet as they can't look cool with a helmet on. These are the guys that you see doing stupid stunts on the highway. These guys would also shout to each other.
Lastly there are the street bike guys. These are the guys that ride either the fancy BMW bikes or some version of a street bike. I include the bike touring bikes in this mix. This group although they ride for the freedom it offers, are also smart enough to know what happens to someone in a motorcycle accident and will typically wear protection. Helmets, jackets with armour, boots, gloves, you name it. These would also be a group that would use a walkie talkie system. As a matter of fact they would use this form of communication over anything else. Not to mention they could afford it and would think it was "neat".
Anyway I hope that helps a little. Although most of the posts I read in reply to your question stated the technology was there I thought the big thing that was lacking is what "type" of rider would use it.

Yeah, I'm with Ardwin here. I don't live in an area where you see anything but the "true Hog" rider types, and they barely have helmets and cell phones, much less bluetooth and radios and all that nonsense. Generally speaking, they really do just point or stop if they have to yammer.
