Question women's clothing

In trying to add detail to a story, I want to describe the clothing a female character wears. As a male, I know very little about the subject. It's all a blur to me. Tank tops, halter tops, crop tops, etc.

Anyone who could give me a short primer on apparel?

Choice of clothing's tied to character and personality, among other things. Some things to consider before constructing that 'wardrobe':

- Where is she living? Local weather / climate?

- What's her job? Her earning capacity?

- What's her attitude towards dressing - fussy, prim and proper, casual, wild, showy, apathetic? Would she likely be attracted to branded clothing, or go for cheap bargains etc? (Where would she shop, in essence.)

- Any quirky personality traits? (i.e. sloppy wouldn't go well with formal clothing; at least for myself.)

- Any extraordinary hobbies that might influence dressing style (partying, for example?)

It's good to have a specific character and background in mind, I think. E.g. even for me, several things influence what I wear. I'm a homemaker, I come from a conservative background, I have a limited budget, I'm a messy eater and generally clumsy, and since young I've been somewhat of a tomboy - so most of my wear is T-shirts and shorts. I think once you have the person in mind, it'll help a lot. Worry about the difficult 'terms' later (i.e. tank tops, halter tops, fur-fringe boots, platform heels, etc) - that you can ask us, or leaf through the fashion section of your newspaper. Get the mental picture first.

Hope that helps!

I already have a character pretty much developed in my head, a young, fairly affluent, casual, rebellious woman in her mid-20s. I can even picture her in a specific top - I just don't know what it's called. Is there a name to a halter top that is tight around the chest but loose and flowing below? I'm sure I've seen them in my local area.

*googles 'babydoll blouse' in Main Search and Images* I think you're right, abbsinthe.

That is indeed what I was trying to think of. Thanks.
