conservative viewpoint/history in public schools

Okay, so what I am in need of is the basis for a conversation where an ultra-conservative father is asking his kid what the kid learned in history/social studies class (third grade), and the kid describes some historical event from a fairly left-wing viewpoint, and the father has a conniption. But since I don't know much about conservative politics (or history, hehe) I'm having trouble thinking of an event. I need something that isn't too obscure for a nine year old class, but that is polarized enough that an extreme conservative would have a major issue with the way it's taught in public schools. If possible, I'd like something other than the discovery/colonization of North America.

Thanks in advance

wmd is on a distinguished road
Third graders (or at least when I was in third grade) are only learning basic history like, pilgrims and indians...

Perhaps the teacher injects her own views regarding the slaughter of the indians and takes it way above the students heads... when the kid comes home he can ask his father about it and that could spark the conversation.
