It's normal for young military guys to fight. I don't know the answer to this. My guess is that fliers would either respect the support from the ship crew or would consider them drones and not worth fighting.
Like I said, a carrier is a city. It's not like the Army where people at the actual site of battle are either combatants or medical: most of the crew of a ship like that are cooks and supply clerks and repairmen and radar guys and what not.
In fact, a carrier is unlike a cruiser or battleship which fights directly and has a lot of gunners aboard. It exists completely to support the planes.
You want a fight, I'd go with marines.
(Don't forget looking into the Tailhook Association scandal, by the way: institutionalized sexual assault.)

Yeah, if you want a female Naval officer with a grudge or a guy with a black mark on his record that caused him to be shipped to shitsville but doesn't count against with his male companions, Tail Hook would do it.

Hey,
I happened upon this thread and am also doing some research in this area. I was able to correspond with a former Navy officer who helps maintain the USS New Jersey. He gave me an excellent resource that I will pass along to you in the hope that it will help. Jane's Fighting Ship's has a website. Unfortunately, you have to pay dearly to use it. But, there are also books of the same title that might be available through your library. I checked ebay for their availability and, yes, they do have them--for upwards of a hundred dollars. Way out of my price range. I'll be trying the library.
I guess it all depends upon how badly you want the information.

Hi again guys
I am halfway through chapter one, "Cancelled", when the main character, Lt. Jack Harper, finds out his leave is cancelled, and will miss out on the birth of his first child. Jack finds this very annoying, but soon gets over it, when the squadron commander, Lyall T. Vercetti, his ex-instructor, comes back from a quiet retirement to lead the new squadron into the hellish skies over Israel.
