Question for gay women

I have a question for any gay women who remember the late eighties, particularly in Britain but also elsewhere.

What did it feel like, being gay then? How did people see you, and act towards you? How was it different from now?

To give some context to the question: I'm introducing a character (Debbie) into my novel who came out in 1988, aged sixteen. I want to know what that would have been like.

As I'm not a gay woman so I can't tell you about any personal experiences. But the punk movement in England had a lot of momentum in the eighties and many gay teens in that time got involved as they didn't fit "conventional" ideas.

I don't know if that helps, but you might be able to go somewhere with that.

Gay Blog - Posts from the Coming Out Category at QueerSighted

You could try this site. Its a blog and there are alot of links to other blogs and a forum. Also a video from youtube about an British woman who has come out (recently tho - she's 19), who's trying to start a discussion about coming out.
