Motels and Interstate Highways

I have a question about Motels: If you pull off the Interstate to check into a motel, how far off the Interstate do you go? and is there any way of leaving the motel, in your car, without going back onto the Interstate at any point?

Normally, you would take an exit ramp off the Interstate to a cross road that the motel, gas station, restaurants, etc. would be on. So, the motel could literally be within a few hundred feet from the interstate (if it was next to the exit ramp) or it could be within a mile or so of it. And, yes, you could leave the motel and drive around. You would take the entrance ramp back onto the interstate from the cross road when you were ready to return to it. Is that what you are asking?

Yes, thanks a lot. Just a little clarification: if you had driven to the motel on the interstate, you would be able to leave the motel and drive off homewards, or anywhere else, without ever going back onto the Interstate, if you wanted to? Am I right?

You don't have to drive on Interstates at all and could drive from one coast of the US to the other. It would just take you a much, much longer time and you would have to travel by two-lane roads, making lots of road changes. But, sure, a person could leave the Interstate at any point and take alternate roads to get somewhere, especially if his home was close.

Motels are generally on frontage roads that connect to the local grid. They are seldom in the middle of nowhere. Most places have other roads and highways that lead to them.
