Broken Nose

A character of mine gets their nose broken and while WebMD and a few other sources have been good for symptoms and ways to treat a broken nose, they haven't told me one thing: cosmetics. Specifically, how does a broken nose look once its healed? I've seen pictures where the nose looks extremely bent, the tip nearly pointing right or left, but is this the case for all broken noses? Can one have a broken nose that heals with just a bump in the bridge or something less extreme?

I was wondering if anyone knew the answer.

It just depends on how they're set, really. And even a hump depends on the nasal structure in the first place. But in the world of fiction, of course, they lead to a distinquishing facial characteristic as inevitably as bumps on the head lead to amnesia.

I've broken my nose seven times in my life. Each time it was luckily broken from the top, near the bridge, as something hard connected with it (tree, foot, fence, etc). Although it hurt to do it, I would pinch the sides to roughly how the nose was shaped before. Because of this, I have a weird but small bump on the bridge and around the sides of my nose. It's good for holding up sunglasses on sweaty days.

Oh! That's helpful!

Is it a large bump? Does your nose bend or is it only a bump? Did you get black eyes from the broken nose?

I had my nose broken for me, many years ago. It hasn't changed shape (still devastatingly attractive, in a very manly way ) but has a small bump on the bridge. Hardly noticeable.

Are you suggesting a cliche?

I do know that they are used for the rugged man-type. However, I wanted my female character to break her nose. Right now, she's a little too...perfect...for my tastes, and her profession has a lot of opportunities for broken bones and noses, so I thought it would work. However, I also don't want to totally ruin her looks, which is why I was wondering if it could heal with just a simple bump instead of the twisted disfigurements I've seen on medical websites.

The nose doesn't bend now, as healed cartilage will quickly become firm again. Imagine taking two forefingers and running them down on either side of your nose. The bump itself is no larger than as if a sunflower seed was permanently lodged up in my nose.

I did get black eyes twice - once from getting kicked in the face (soccer/football) and the other from a sledding adventure (tree meets face at high velocity). A hit to the nose hard enough to break it usually results in that immediate region getting smashed/bruised. Once, though, it was a frisbee golf disc that hit my nose with perfect aim (not in my opinion, obviously).

Google Images has pictures for "broken nose" some broken, some apparently healed. I found 6,390 results. Have fun with that!

I did check Google and as I said most of the noses were extreme examples, totally bent, or in the process of healing, or people getting nose jobs. Granted, I didn't sift through all 6k.

Wow, I did not know that, but now that I look at the picture, it is apparent, isn't it? Interesting that she didn't get a nose job, being a Hollywood actress and all.

Thanks Mike and Mike C. It was that kind of small bump I was wondering if it was possible to get without cosmetic surgery.

Okay, Himani. Just for you, since your avatar rocks and I loved my time back in Arizona, I'll slam my nose in the door and post a multi-stage set of pics.

1. Pushed down a flight of stairs. Broken nose and stitches above the left eye.
2. Playing goalie in soccer/football. Dove for the ball and got a nice kick to the face.
3. Sledding. One of those old-school sleds with the metal rungs. It goes pretty fast on ice, but it's hard to steer.
4. Bicycle jump over one of the wings of a walk-out basement. Wasn't going fast enough and the wall caught my bike in between wheels, flipping me over the bars. As I landed, I kissed my knee.
5. Cabbage patch doll sent as a missle from my older sister. Actually, this wasn't the first cabbage patch doll incident. The first one resulted in a broken skull where they had to use glue to hold my head together (or at least that's what they told me. I think they were just fucking with me).
6. I got in a mummy bag (sleeping bag) and took to the stairs. I thought that sofa cushions would be enough for a safe landing against the wall at the bottom. Wrong.
7. Playing 'catch' with my dad. He liked to whip the ball as fast as he could at me. Took one right to the face. After that, I got a catch-back. It wasn't as bad as my sister, though, who, chasing my other sister with a bottle of ketchup, tripped over one of the legs of the table and face-planted into a hard arm of a chair. It smooshed her lip up for a week and made it look like she was scowling all the time. It suited her.
